1	Der Besuch des midianitischen Priesters Jitro, der Priester von Midian, der Schwiegervater von Mose, erfuhr, was Gott alles für Mose und für sein Volk Israel getan und dass er die Israeliten aus Ägypten herausgeführt hatte.	When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt;
2	Da machte er sich mit seiner Tochter Zippora auf den Weg. Mose hatte nämlich seine Frau Zippora vorsichtshalber zu ihrem Vater zurückgeschickt.	Then Jethro, Moses’ father in law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back,
3	Jitro nahm auch die beiden Söhne Zipporas mit. Der ältere hieß Gerschom (Gast-dort), weil Mose bei seiner Geburt gesagt hatte: »Ich bin Gast in einem fremden Land geworden«;	And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:
4	der jüngere hieß Eliëser (Gott hilft), denn Mose hatte gesagt: »Der Gott meines Vaters hilft mir, er hat mich vor dem Schwert des Pharaos gerettet.«	And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:
5	Moses Schwiegervater kam also mit den Familienangehörigen Moses zu ihm an den Lagerplatz in der Wüste, zum Gottesberg.	And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:
6	Er ließ Mose ausrichten: »Dein Schwiegervater Jitro ist gekommen! Auch deine Frau ist da und bringt deine beiden Söhne mit!«	And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.
7	Da ging Mose seinem Schwiegervater entgegen, beugte sich nieder und küsste ihn. Nachdem sie einander begrüßt hatten, gingen sie in Moses Zelt.	And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.
8	Mose berichtete seinem Schwiegervater, was der Herr alles gegen den Pharao und die Ägypter getan hatte, um das Volk Israel zu befreien, und wie er sie unterwegs in allen Nöten und Gefahren beschützt hatte.	And Moses told his father in law all that the Lord had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the Lord delivered them.
9	—	And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the Lord had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.
10	Jitro freute sich, dass der Herr den Israeliten so viel Gutes erwiesen hatte, und sagte: »Gepriesen sei der Herr, der euch aus der Gewalt des Pharaos und der Ägypter gerettet und das Volk von der Unterdrückung befreit hat!	And Jethro said, Blessed be the Lord, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.
11	Jetzt weiß ich: Der Herr ist größer als alle anderen Götter; denn er hat sich als stärker erwiesen als die Ägypter in ihrer Vermessenheit.«	Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.
12	Dann opferte er Gott Tiere als Brand- und Mahlopfer, und Aaron und alle Ältesten Israels kamen dazu und hielten mit ihm das Opfermahl vor Gott. ()	And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father in law before God.
13	Einsetzung von Schiedsleuten als Helfer Moses Am nächsten Tag setzte sich Mose hin, um in Streitfällen Recht zu sprechen. Die Leute drängten sich vor ihm vom Morgen bis zum Abend.	And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.
14	Als sein Schwiegervater sah, wie viel Arbeit Mose damit hatte, fragte er ihn: »Was machst du dir da für eine Mühe? Die Leute drängen sich vor dir vom Morgen bis zum Abend. Musst du das alles alleine tun?«	And when Moses’ father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?
15	Mose sagte: »Was soll ich machen? Sie wollen eine Entscheidung von Gott haben.	And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:
16	Wenn zwei von ihnen Streit haben, kommen sie zu mir. Ich entscheide ihren Fall und sage ihnen die Gesetze und Weisungen Gottes.«	When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.
17	Sein Schwiegervater erwiderte: »Du musst das anders anfassen.	And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.
18	Es ist einfach zu viel für dich; du kannst nicht alles alleine tun. Du reibst dich sonst noch auf, und auch für die Leute ist es viel zu anstrengend.	Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.
19	Pass auf, was ich dir rate – Gott möge seinen Segen dazu geben! Deine Aufgabe soll es sein, in schwierigen Rechtsfällen die Entscheidung Gottes einzuholen.	Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:
20	Du sollst ihnen auch die Gebote und Anordnungen Gottes erklären und ihnen sagen, welche Regeln für das Zusammenleben des Volkes gelten sollen.	And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.
21	Für die leichteren Streitfälle aber wähle angesehene Männer aus, die nach Gottes Geboten leben, zuverlässig und unbestechlich sind. Setze sie ein als Verantwortliche für jeweils tausend, hundert, fünfzig und zehn.	Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
22	Sie sollen dem Volk jederzeit als Schiedsleute zur Verfügung stehen und die gewöhnlichen Rechtsfälle entscheiden; nur mit den schwierigeren Fällen sollen sie zu dir kommen. Mach dir die Last leichter, lass sie daran mittragen!	And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
23	Wenn Gott damit einverstanden ist und du so verfährst, wirst du unter der Last deines Amtes nicht zusammenbrechen, und die Leute werden immer zufrieden nach Hause gehen.«	If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.
24	Mose nahm den Rat seines Schwiegervaters an und handelte danach.	So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.
25	Er wählte aus allen Stämmen Israels angesehene Männer aus und setzte sie als Verantwortliche über je tausend, hundert, fünfzig und zehn.	And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
26	Sie entschieden von nun an die einfacheren Streitfälle und legten Mose nur die schwierigen Fälle zur Entscheidung vor.	And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.
27	Darauf verabschiedete Mose seinen Schwiegervater, und Jitro kehrte wieder in sein Land zurück.	And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
