|---|---|---|
I will not stir him up, like one that is cruel, for who can resist my countenance? | Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?
Who hath given me before that I should repay him? All things that are under heaven are mine. | Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn?
I will not spare him, nor his mighty words, and framed to make supplication. | Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee?
Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can go into the midst of his mouth? | Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?
Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about. | Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?
His body is like molten shields, shut close up with scales pressing upon one another. | Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants?
One is joined to another, and not so much as any air can come between them: | Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears?
They stick one to another and they hold one another fast, and shall not be separated. | Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.
His sneezing is like the shining of fire, and his eyes like the eyelids of the morning. | Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?
Out of his mouth go forth lamps, like torches of lighted fire. | None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?
Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, like that of a pot heated and boiling. | Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.
His breath kindleth coals, and a flame cometh forth out of his mouth. | I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.
In his neck strength shall dwell, and want goeth before his face. | Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle?
The members of his flesh cleave one to another: he shall send lightnings against him, and they shall not be carried to another place. | Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about.
His heart shall be as hard as a stone, and as firm as a smith's anvil. | His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.
When he shall raise him up, the angels shall fear, and being affrighted shall purify themselves. | One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.
When a sword shall lay at him, it shall not be able to hold, nor a spear, nor a breastplate. | They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.
For he shall esteem iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood. | By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
The archer shall not put him to flight, the stones of the sling are to him like stubble. | Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out.
As stubble will he esteem the hammer, and he will laugh him to scorn who shaketh the spear. | Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron.
The beams of the sun shall be under him, and he shall strew gold under him like mire. | His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.
He shall make the deep sea to boil like a pot, and shall make it as when ointments boil. | In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.
A path shall shine after him, he shall esteem the deep as growing old. | The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved.
There is no power upon earth that can be compared with him who was made to fear no one. | His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.
He beholdeth every high thing, he is king over all the children of pride. | When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves.
— | The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon.
— | He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.
— | The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble.
— | Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.
— | Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire.
— | He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.
— | He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary.
— | Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.
— | He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.
