Ordsprog af Salomo, Davids Søn, Israels Konge. | The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
Af dem skal man lære Visdom forstandig Tale, | To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
tage mod Tugt, som gør klog, mod Retfærdighed, Ret og Retsind; | To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
de skal give tankeløse Klogskab, ungdommen Kundskab og Kløgt; | To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
den vise høre og øge sin Viden, den forstandige vinde sig Levekunst; | A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
de skal lære at tyde Ordsprog og Billeder, de vises Ord og Gaader. | To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
HERRENS Frygt er Kundskabs begyndelse, Daarer ringeagter Visdom og Tugt. | The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Hør, min Søn, paa din Faders Tugt, opgiv ikke din Moders Belæring. | My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
thi begge er en yndig Krans til dit Hoved og Kæder til din Hals. | For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
Min Søn, sig nej, naar Syndere lokker! | My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
| If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
Som Dødsriget sluger vi dem levende, med Hud og Haar, som for de i Graven. | Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:
Vi vinder os Gods og Guld, vi fylder vore Huse med Rov. | We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
Gør fælles Sag med os; vi har alle fælles Pung!« | Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:
— min Søn, gaa da ikke med dem, hold din Fod fra deres Sti; | My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
thi deres Fødder løber efter ondt, de haster for at udgyde Blod. | For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
Thi det er unyttigt at udspænde Garnet for alle Fugles Øjne; | Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
de lurer paa eget Blod, lægger Baghold for eget Liv. | And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.
| So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
Visdommen raaber paa Gaden, paa Torvene løfter den Røsten; | Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
oppe paa Murene kalder den, tager til Orde i Byen ved Portindgangene: | She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,
Hvor længe vil I tankeløse elske Tankeløshed, Spotterne finde deres Glæde i Spot og Daarerne hade Kundskab? | How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
Vend eder til min Revselse! Se, jeg lader min Aand udvælde for eder, jeg kundgør eder mine Ord: | Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
Fordi jeg raabte og I stod imod, jeg vinked og ingen ænsed det, | Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
men I lod haant om alt mit Raad og tog ikke min Revselse til jer, | But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
derfor ler jeg ved eders Ulykke, spotter, naar det, I frygter, kommer, | I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
| When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
fordi de hadede Kundskab og ikke valgte HERRENS Frygt; | For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord:
mit Raad tog de ikke til sig, men lod haant om al min Revselse. | They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
Frugt af deres Færd skal de nyde og mættes med egne Raad; | Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
thi tankeløses Egensind bliver deres Død, Taabers Sorgløshed bliver deres Undergang; | For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
| But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
