1 羅波安 往 示劍去；因為 以色列人 都 到了 示劍 要立 他作王。 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.
2 尼八 的兒子 耶羅波安 先前躲避 所羅門 王，逃往 埃及， 住 在那裡（他聽見這事。） And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)
3 以色列人打發 人去請 他來，他 就和以色列 會眾 都 來 見 羅波安，對他說： That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,
4 「你父親 使 我們負重軛，做苦工，現在 求你 使 我們 做的苦 工、負的重 軛 輕鬆些，我們就事奉你。」 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.
5 羅波安對他們 說：「你們暫且 去，第三 日 再來 見我。」民 就去了。 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.
6 羅波安之父 所羅門 在 世的日子，有 侍立 在他面前 的老年人，羅波安 王 和 他們商議，說：「你們 給我出個甚麼 主意，我好回 覆 這 民。」 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?
7 老年人 對他 說：「現在 王若 服事 這 民 如 僕人，用好 話 回答 他們，他們就永遠 作 王的 僕人。」 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.
8 王卻不用 老年人 給他 出的主意，就和 那些 與他 一同長大、 在他面前 侍立 的少年人 商議， But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
9 說：「這 民 對我 說：『你父親 使 我們負 重軛， 求你使我們輕鬆 些。』你們 給我出個甚麼 主意，我好回 覆 他們。」 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?
10 那 同他 長大 的少年人 說：「 這 民 對王 說：『你父親 使我們負 重軛，求你 使我們 輕鬆些。』王要對他們 如此 說：『我的小拇指頭 比我父親 的腰 還粗。 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
11 我父親 使你們 負 重 軛，我 必使你們負 更重 的軛！我父親 用鞭子 責打 你們，我 要用蠍子鞭 責打 你們！』」 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12 耶羅波安 和眾 百姓 遵著 羅波安 王 所說「你們第三 日 再來 見我」的那話，第三 日 他們果然來了。 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.
13 王 用嚴厲的 話回答 百姓，不用 老年人 給他 所 出的主意， And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him;
14 照著少年人 所出的主意 對民 說：「我父親 使你們負重 軛，我 必使你們負 更重 的軛！我父親 用鞭子 責打 你們，我 要用蠍子鞭 責打 你們！」 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
15 王 不肯 依 從 百姓，這事 乃 出於 耶和華，為 要應驗 他 藉 示羅人 亞希雅 對 尼八 的兒子 耶羅波安 所 說 的話。 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the Lord, that he might perform his saying, which the Lord spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 以色列 眾民 見 王 不 依 從他們， 就 對 王 說：我們 與大衛 有甚麼 分兒呢？與耶西 的兒子 並沒有 關涉。以色列人哪，各回各家去吧！ 大衛家啊，自己顧自己吧！於是，以色列人 都回自己家 裡去了， So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.
17 惟獨住 猶大 城邑 的以色列 人，羅波安 仍作他們 的王。 But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18 羅波安 王 差遣 掌管 服苦之人 的 亞多蘭往以色列人那裡去， 以色列人 就用石頭 打 死 他。羅波安 王 急忙 上 車，逃回 耶路撒冷去了。 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19 這樣，以色列人 背叛 大衛 家，直到 今 日。 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
20 以色列眾 人 聽見 耶羅波安 回來了，就打發 人去請 他 到 會眾面前，立他 作 以色列 眾人 的王。除了 猶大 支派 以外，沒 有 順從 大衛 家的。 And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
21 羅波安 來到 耶路撒冷，招聚 猶大 全 家 和 便雅憫 支派 的人共十八萬，都是挑選 的戰 士，要與 以色列 家 爭戰，好將 國 奪回，再歸所羅門 的兒子 羅波安。 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
22 但 神 的話 臨 到 神 人 示瑪雅，說： But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
23 「你去告訴 所羅門 的兒子 猶大 王 羅波安 和 猶大、便雅憫 全 家，並其餘 的民 說： Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
24 『耶和華 如此 說：你們不可 上去 與 你們的弟兄 以色列 人 爭戰。各 歸 各家去吧！因為 這 事 出於我。』」眾人就聽從 耶和華 的話，遵著耶和華 的命 回 去了。 Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the Lord, and returned to depart, according to the word of the Lord.
25 耶羅波安 在以法蓮 山地 建築 示劍，就住 在其中；又從示劍 出去，建築 毘努伊勒。 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.
26 耶羅波安 心裡 說：「恐怕 這國 仍歸 大衛 家； And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:
27 這 民 若 上 耶路撒冷去，在耶和華 的殿 裡獻 祭，他們 的心 必歸 向 他們的主─猶大 王 羅波安，就把我殺了，仍歸 猶大 王 羅波安。」 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.
28 耶羅波安王 就籌劃定妥，鑄造了 兩個 金 牛犢，對眾民 說：「以色列人哪，你們上 耶路撒冷 去實在是難； 這就是 領你們出 埃及 地的 神。」 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
29 他就把 牛犢一隻 安 在伯特利， 一隻 安 在但。 And he set the one in Beth–el, and the other put he in Dan.
30 這 事 叫 百姓 陷在罪裡，因為他們往 但 去 拜那牛犢。 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.
31 耶羅波安在邱壇 那裡建 殿，將那 不 屬利未 人 的凡 民 立 為祭司。 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
32 耶羅波安 定 八 月 十 五 日 為節期，像 在猶大 的節期一樣，自己上 壇 獻祭。他在伯特利 也這樣 向他所 鑄 的牛犢 獻祭，又將 立 為 邱壇 的祭司 安置 在伯特利。 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Beth–el, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Beth–el the priests of the high places which he had made.
33 他 在八 月 十 五 日，就是 他私自 所定 的月日，為以色列 人 立作 節期的日子，在伯特利 上 壇 燒香。 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Beth–el the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.
