1 凱撒 提庇留 在位 第十五 年，本丟•彼拉多 作猶太 巡撫， 希律 作加利利 分封的王， 他 兄弟 腓力 作以土利亞 和 特拉可尼 地方 分封的王， 呂撒聶 作亞比利尼 分封的王， Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,
2 亞那 和 該亞法 作大祭司。那時，撒迦利亞 的兒子 約翰 在 曠野裡， 神 的話 臨 到他。 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
3 他就 來 到 約旦河 一帶 地方，宣講 悔改 的洗禮，使 罪 得赦。 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
4 正如 先知 以賽亞 書 上所記 的話，說：在 曠野 有人聲 喊著說：預備 主 的道，修 直 他 的路！ As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
5 一切 山窪 都要填滿； 大小山岡 都要削平！ 彎彎曲曲 的地方要 改為 正直； 高高低低 的道路 要改為 平坦！ Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
6 凡 有血氣的，都要見 神 的救恩！ And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
7 約翰對那出來 要受 他 洗 的眾人 說：「毒蛇 的種類！誰 指示 你們 逃避 將來 的忿怒呢？ Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 你們要結出 果子來，與悔改 的心相稱。 不要 自己 心裡說：『有 亞伯拉罕 為我們的祖宗。』 我告訴 你們， 神 能 從 這些 石頭中，給亞伯拉罕 興起 子孫來。 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
9 現在 斧子 已經 放 在 樹 根上， 凡 不 結 好 果子 的樹 就砍下來， 丟 在 火裡。」 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
10 眾人 問 他 說：「這樣，我們當做 甚麼呢？」 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
11 約翰回答 說：「有 兩 件衣裳的，就分給 那沒 有的； 有 食物的，也當這樣 行。」 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
12 又有 稅吏 來 要受洗， 問 他 說：「夫子，我們當做 甚麼呢？」 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
13 約翰 說：「除了 例定的數目，不要 多 取。」 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.
14 又 有 兵丁 問 他 說：「我們 當 做 甚麼呢？」 約翰 說：「不要 以強暴待人，也不要 訛詐人， 自己有 錢糧 就當知足。」 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
15 百姓 指望基督來的時候， 人 都 心裡 猜疑，或者 約翰 是 基督。 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
16 約翰 說：「 我 是用水 給你們 施洗，但 有一位能力比我 更大 的要來， 我就是 給他 解 鞋 帶 也不 配。他 要用 聖 靈 與 火 給你們 施洗。 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
17 他 手 裡拿著簸箕，要揚淨 他 的場， 把麥子 收 在 倉裡， 把糠 用不滅的 火 燒盡了。」 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
18 約翰又 用許多 別 的話勸 百姓，向他們傳福音。 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
19 只是 分封的王 希律，因 他 兄弟 之妻 希羅底的緣故，並 因 他 所行 的一切 惡事，受了 約翰的責備； But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
20 又 另外 添了 一件，就是 把約翰 收 在 監裡。 Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.
21 眾 百姓 都受了洗，耶穌 也 受了洗。 正禱告的時候，天 就開了， Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
22 聖 靈 降臨 在 他身上，形狀 彷彿 鴿子；又有 聲音 從 天上 來，說：「你 是 我 的愛 子，我喜悅 你。」 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
23 耶穌 開頭傳道，年紀約有 三十 歲。依 人看來，他是 約瑟 的兒子；約瑟是希里的兒子； And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,
24 希里是瑪塔的兒子；瑪塔是利未的兒子；利未是麥基的兒子；麥基是雅拿的兒子；雅拿是約瑟的兒子； Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph,
25 約瑟是瑪他提亞的兒子；瑪他提亞是亞摩斯的兒子；亞摩斯是拿鴻的兒子；拿鴻是以斯利的兒子；以斯利是拿該的兒子； Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the son of Naum, which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge,
