| 1 | 令名愈於寶膏、死日愈於生日、 | A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth. |
| 2 | 入居喪之家、愈於入筵宴之家、蓋死爲衆人之終、生者必心藏之、 | It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart. |
| 3 | 憂戚愈於嬉笑、蓋面有憂、致心正焉、 | Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better. |
| 4 | 智者心在居喪之家、愚者心在歡樂之家、 | The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. |
| 5 | 聆智者之譴責、愈於聽愚者之謳歌、 | It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools. |
| 6 | 愚者之笑、猶釜底焚荊棘之聲、斯亦虛空、 | For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity. |
| 7 | 智者勒索、則成爲愚、賄賂敗人明哲、 | Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart. |
| 8 | 事之終愈於事之始、心忍愈於心驕、 | Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. |
| 9 | 心勿遽怒、蓋怒乃愚者所懷、 | Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools. |
| 10 | 勿謂今不如古何耶、詢此、乃不智也、 | Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this. |
| 11 | 智之美同於業、有益於凡覩日光者、 | Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun. |
| 12 | 智爲護庇、金錢亦然、惟智能保人之生命、其益尤著、 | For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it. |
| 13 | 當考上帝之作爲、彼所曲者、孰能直之、 | Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked? |
| 14 | 亨通之日宜喜樂、患難之日宜思維、上帝使二者互至、俾人不得料其後、○ | In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him. |
| 15 | 有義人行義而隕沒、有惡人行惡而長久、我於虛空之日、皆見之矣、 | All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness. |
| 16 | 勿過於義、勿過於智、何爲自取敗亡耶、 | Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself? |
| 17 | 勿作極惡、勿爲愚昧、何爲未及期而死耶、 | Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time? |
| 18 | 有事可爲、持此爲美、彼亦勿舍、寅畏上帝者、必脫於諸難、○ | It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all. |
| 19 | 智慧使哲人有能、愈於邑中十有司、 | Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city. |
| 20 | 義者恆行善、而絕未干罪、世無其人、 | For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not. |
| 21 | 人所言者、勿悉聽之、免聞爾僕之詛、 | Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee: |
| 22 | 蓋爾屢詛人、爾心自知之、○ | For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others. |
| 23 | 凡此諸事、我嘗以智驗之、自謂我將得智、惟智遠我、 | All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me. |
| 24 | 凡所有者、其理玄遠深邃、孰能測之、 | That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out? |
| 25 | 我轉而決志究察智慧、與萬事之原由、欲知惡之爲愚、愚之爲妄、 | I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness: |
| 26 | 察知有婦、心爲罟擭、手爲繩索、較死尤苦、上帝所悅者、得以避之、惟罪人爲其所陷、 | And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her. |
| 27 | 傳道者曰、我旣一一察之、究其理之所以、則有得焉、 | Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account: |
| 28 | 我心所求、猶未遇者、千男之中、我得其一、衆女之中、不得其一、 | Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found. |
| 29 | 我察而知、上帝造人、本爲正直、而人所謀、機巧百出、 | Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions. |
