1 温和之應對息忿、暴厲之言詞激怒、 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.
2 智者之舌、善宣知識、蠢者之口、乃吐愚頑、 The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.
3 耶和華目視萬方、鑒觀善惡、 The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.
4 温良之舌、乃生命之樹、乖謬之詞、乃摧折人心、 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.
5 輕視父訓者爲愚人、順承斥責者得智慧、 A fool despiseth his father’s instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.
6 義者之家、多藏貨財、惡者所入、內寓煩擾、 In the house of the righteous is much treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.
7 智者之口、播揚知識、愚者之心、出發不義、 The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish doeth not so.
8 惡者之祭、爲耶和華所惡、正人之祈、爲其所悅、 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.
9 惡者之道、爲耶和華所惡、從義之人、爲其所愛、 The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the Lord: but he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.
10 離道途者受重懲、惡斥責者致死亡、 Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die.
11 陰府死域、耶和華且洞鑒之、況世人之心乎、 Hell and destruction are before the Lord: how much more then the hearts of the children of men?
12 侮慢者不悅斥責、不就智人、 A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.
13 心樂則顏歡、心憂則神敗、 A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.
14 達人之心求知識、蠢者之口嗜愚頑、 The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.
15 遭困苦者、日處逆境、有歡心者、恆飫珍饈、 All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.
16 少有而寅畏耶和華、愈於多財而煩擾、 Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith.
17 茹菜蔬而相愛、愈於食太牢而相憾、 Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.
18 暴怒者啟爭端、忍怒者息爭競、 A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.
19 惰者之途、如環棘籬、正人之路、成爲達道、 The way of the slothful man is as an hedge of thorns: but the way of the righteous is made plain.
20 智子悅父、蠢人輕母、 A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.
21 無知者以愚爲樂、明哲者直道而行、 Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom: but a man of understanding walketh uprightly.
22 無同謀、計不就、多議士、則必成、 Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.
23 應對得當、自覺歡欣、言語適時、何其嘉美、 A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!
24 智者由生命之道而上達、致遠在下之陰府、 The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.
25 耶和華傾驕人之家、立嫠婦之界、 The Lord will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow.
26 惡謀爲耶和華所惡、良言純潔可愛、 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.
27 貪貨財者擾己家、惡賄賂者得生存、 He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.
28 義者應對、心先思維、惡者之口、直吐邪慝、 The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.
29 耶和華遠惡人、惟聽義者之祈、 The Lord is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.
30 目光悅人心、嘉音健骸骨、 The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat.
31 聽致生之斥責、必與智者偕居、 The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.
32 棄勸懲者、乃輕己魂、聽斥責者、必得知識、 He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.
33 寅畏耶和華、卽智慧之訓、謙遜乃尊榮之先導、 The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.
