1 猶大便雅憫之敵、聞俘囚之衆、爲以色列之上帝耶和華建殿、 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel;
2 則詣所羅巴伯與族長、謂之曰、請許我與爾同建、蓋我尋求爾之上帝、如爾曹然、自亞述王以撒哈頓攜我來時、以迄於今、與之獻祭、 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar–haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.
3 所羅巴伯與耶書亞、及其餘以色列族長曰、建上帝室、爾曹勿與、惟我儕爲以色列之上帝耶和華自建之、循波斯王古列所命、 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the Lord God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
4 緣此、斯土之民使猶大人手弱、擾其工作、 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
5 賄通議士、以敗其志、自波斯王古列在位之日、至波斯王大利烏卽位之年、皆如是、 And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
6 亞哈隨魯卽位時、敵人具呈、訟猶大及耶路撒冷居民、○ And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
7 亞達薛西年間、比施蘭、米特利達、他別、與其黨具呈上告、乃用亞蘭文字、亞蘭方言、 And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
8 方伯利宏、繕寫伸帥、亦上告、 Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
9 二人及其同儕、底拿人、亞法薩提迦人、他毘拉人、亞法撒人、亞基衞人、巴比倫人、書珊迦人、底亥人、以攔人、 Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
10 與其餘諸族、卽尊大之亞斯那巴所遷、置於撒瑪利亞邑、及伯拉河西者、 And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.
11 奉表於亞達薛西王、其文曰、爾僕河西之人奏王、 This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
12 願王知之、自爾而來、至於我所耶路撒冷之猶大人、建此叛亂惡劣之邑、已治其基、而成其垣、 Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
13 願王知之、若建斯邑而成其垣、其後彼不進貢、輸餉納稅、終必有損於王、 Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.
14 我儕旣食宮鹽、不宜見王受辱、故奏於王、 Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
15 請稽先王典籍、則見而知、此爲叛亂之邑、自古多起紛擾、常爲列王諸州之害、故爲荒墟、 That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
16 敢陳於王、若斯邑復建、其垣竣工、則河西之地、不復爲王有矣、 We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
17 王諭方伯利宏、繕寫伸帥、與其同儕、居撒瑪利亞及河西者、曰、願爾綏安、 Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
18 爾曹所陳之表、誦於我前旣悉、 The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
19 我命考稽、悉知此邑自古叛王、中有悖逆叛亂之事、 And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
20 惟昔有權之王、治耶路撒冷、管轄河西四境、其人爲之進貢、輸餉納稅、 There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.
21 爾當發令、俾其人止工、不建斯邑、俟我再降諭旨、 Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
22 爾其愼之、勿延、奚可生害、致虧諸王哉、 Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
23 亞達薛西王之詔一道、旣讀於利宏、繕寫伸帥、及其同儕前、彼衆急往耶路撒冷、見猶大人、以權力迫之止工、 Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
24 於是耶路撒冷建上帝室之工乃止、迄於波斯王大利烏二年、 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
