| 1 | 耶和華諭我曰、 | The word of the Lord came unto me again, saying, |
| 2 | 爾論以色列地、奚用諺云、父食酸葡萄、而子齒軟、 | What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge? |
| 3 | 主耶和華曰、我指己生而誓、爾在以色列中、勿復用此諺、 | As I live, saith the Lord God, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. |
| 4 | 諸靈屬我、父之靈屬我、子之靈亦然、惟犯罪者必死、 | Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. |
| 5 | 人若爲義、循法合理、 | But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right, |
| 6 | 未食於山、未瞻仰以色列家之偶像、未汚其鄰之妻、未近天癸之婦、 | And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman, |
| 7 | 未欺凌人、反負者之質、不奪人之物、飢者供以食、裸者被以衣、 | And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; |
| 8 | 貸金不取利息、禁手作惡、以誠實鞫兩造、 | He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man, |
| 9 | 循我典章、守我律例、行事誠實、斯乃義人、必得生存、主耶和華言之矣、 | Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord God. |
| 10 | 設其人生子爲盜、而流人血、行上所言之惡、 | If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things, |
| 11 | 不行上所言之善、食於山、汚其鄰之妻、 | And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour’s wife, |
| 12 | 欺凌貧乏、奪人之物、不反人之質、瞻仰偶像、行可惡之事、 | Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination, |
| 13 | 貸金而取利息、斯人豈得生存乎、必不得生存也、旣行此可惡之事、必至死亡、流血之罪、歸於其身、 | Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him. |
| 14 | 設斯人生子、見父所犯諸罪、則懼、而不效之、 | Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like, |
| 15 | 不食於山、不瞻仰以色列家之偶像、不汚其鄰之妻、 | That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife, |
| 16 | 不欺凌人、不受人之質、不奪人之物、飢者供以食、裸者被以衣、 | Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment, |
| 17 | 禁手不虐貧乏、不取利息、守我律例、循我典章、斯人不因父罪而死、必得生存、 | That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live. |
| 18 | 惟其父行殘暴、奪同宗、作不善於民間、必死於其罪、 | As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity. |
| 19 | 爾曹猶曰、子不負父罪、曷故子若循法合理、守我典章、而遵行之、必得生存、 | Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live. |
| 20 | 犯罪者必死、子不負父罪、父不負子罪、義者之義、必歸於己、惡者之惡、亦歸於己、 | The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. |
| 21 | 如惡人悛改所犯之罪、守我典章、循法合理、必得生存、不至死亡、 | But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. |
| 22 | 其所犯之罪、不復見憶、必因所行之義、而得生存、 | All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. |
| 23 | 主耶和華曰、惡人死亡、豈我所悅、我寧不悅其轉離惡途、而得生存乎、 | Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live? |
| 24 | 如義人轉離其義而行惡、效惡人行可惡之事、豈得生存乎、其所行之義、不復見憶、必死於其所蹈之愆、所犯之罪、 | But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die. |
| 25 | 惟爾曹云、主道不公、以色列家其聽之、我之道、豈非公乎、爾之道、豈非不公乎、 | Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal? |
| 26 | 義人轉離其義而行惡、因而致死、是因所行之惡而死、 | When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die. |
| 27 | 如惡人轉離所行之惡、循法合理、必保其生、 | Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. |
| 28 | 因其思維、悛改所犯之罪、必得生存、不至死亡、 | Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. |
| 29 | 以色列家猶云、主道不公、以色列家歟、我之道、豈非公乎、爾之道、豈非不公乎、 | Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal? |
| 30 | 故主耶和華曰、以色列家歟、我必依各人所行而鞫之、爾其回轉、離棄諸罪、免愆尤之窒礙、 | Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord God. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. |
| 31 | 以色列家歟、當棄所犯之罪、新爾心神、奚自取死、 | Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? |
| 32 | 主耶和華曰、人之死亡、我所不悅、故當回轉、而得生存、 | For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye. |
