1 以法蓮人謂基甸曰、爾與米甸人戰、而不招我、何待我如是、遂切責之、 And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.
2 基甸曰、我之所爲、豈能比爾之所爲、以法蓮所採之遺果、詎不勝於亞比以謝所斂之葡萄乎、 And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abi–ezer?
3 上帝以米甸二伯俄立西伊伯、付於爾手、爾之所爲、我焉能及、基甸言此、以法蓮人之怒遂息、 God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.
4 基甸與從者三百人、至約但濟河、雖困憊、而仍追敵、 And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.
5 基甸謂疎割人曰、我追米甸二王西巴撒慕拿、從者困憊、請給以餅、 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.
6 疎割牧伯曰、西巴撒慕拿之手、豈在爾手、而使我以餅給爾軍乎、 And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?
7 基甸曰、迨耶和華以西巴撒慕拿、付於我手、我必以曠野之荊棘、扑爾之體、 And Gideon said, Therefore when the Lord hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.
8 由此而上、至毘努伊勒、亦如是以請、其人所答、如疎割人、 And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.
9 基甸謂之曰、我平安而歸時、必毀此臺、○ And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.
10 當時東方執刃之軍旅、隕者十有二萬、所遺一萬五千、從西巴撒慕拿在加各、 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.
11 敵營方宴然、基甸由挪巴約比哈東、從居幕者之道、往而擊之、 And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure.
12 米甸二王西巴撒慕拿遁、基甸追而擒之、潰其全軍、 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.
13 約阿施子基甸、自希列斯阪戰場而返、 And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,
14 擒疎割一少者訊之、遂書疎割牧伯長老之名、凡七十七人、 And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.
15 至疎割、語其人曰、昔爾譏我云、西巴撒慕拿之手、豈在爾手、而使我以餅給爾之憊卒乎、試觀其人在此、 And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?
16 遂執邑中長老、以曠野之荊棘懲疎割人、 And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.
17 毀毘努伊勒之臺、殺其邑人、 And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.
18 問西巴撒慕拿曰、爾在他泊、所殺之人若何、曰、似爾、俱有王子之狀、 Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.
19 曰、是我同母兄弟也、我指耶和華之生而誓、爾若存其命、我亦不殺爾、 And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the Lord liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.
20 遂諭長子益帖曰、爾起殺之、惟孺子不拔劍、以尚幼而懼故也、 And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.
21 西巴撒慕拿曰、爾起殺我、蓋人若何、其力亦如之、基甸遂起殺之、取其駝項之新月環、○ Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.
22 以色列人謂基甸曰、爾旣救我脫於米甸人手、爾及子孫當治我儕、 Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.
23 基甸曰、我不治爾、我子亦不治爾、治爾者乃耶和華也、 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.
24 又曰、我有所求、各以所獲耳環予我、蓋敵乃以實瑪利人、有金耳環、 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)
25 衆曰、我樂與之、遂鋪其衣、各以所獲耳環、擲於其中、 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.
26 基甸所索之金耳環、重一千七百舍客勒、此外又得米甸王所佩之月環垂環、所衣之絳衣、及其駝項之索、 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels’ necks.
27 基甸用之作聖衣、置於己邑俄弗拉、以色列人狥欲拜之、成爲基甸與其家之機檻、 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.
28 米甸人服於以色列人、不復昂首、基甸在日、其地綏安、歷四十年、○ Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.
29 約阿施子耶路巴力歸居己第、 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.
30 基甸妻室衆多、生子七十、 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.
31 其妾在示劍、亦生一子、基甸命名亞比米勒、 And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.
32 約阿施子基甸壽高而卒、葬於父約阿施之墓、在亞比以謝族之俄弗拉、○ And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi–ezrites.
33 基甸旣沒、以色列人轉而狥欲從諸巴力、立巴力比利土爲其神、 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal–berith their god.
34 不憶其上帝耶和華、救之脫於四周敵人手者、 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
35 亦不依耶路巴力卽基甸、所施於彼之恩、而厚遇其家、 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
