1 厥後、大衞詢於耶和華曰、我往猶大之邑可否、耶和華曰、可、曰、當往何邑、曰、希伯崙、 And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the Lord said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
2 大衞遂往、其二妻、耶斯列女亞希暖、與曾適迦密人拿八之亞比該亦往、 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal’s wife the Carmelite.
3 大衞率從者、及其眷聚咸至、居希伯崙諸邑、 And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.
4 猶大人至、膏大衞爲猶大族王、○ And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabesh–gilead were they that buried Saul.
5 或告大衞曰、葬掃羅者、乃基列雅比人也、大衞遣使詣基列雅比人曰、爾厚待爾主掃羅而葬之、願耶和華錫嘏於爾、 And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh–gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the Lord, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.
6 爾旣行此、願耶和華以仁慈誠實待爾、我亦報爾之恩、 And now the Lord shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.
7 爾主掃羅旣沒、猶大族膏我爲其王、爾當強乃手而奮勇、○ Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.
8 掃羅軍長尼珥子押尼珥、攜掃羅子伊施波設濟河、至瑪哈念、 But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s host, took Ish–bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;
9 立之爲王、治基列、亞書利、耶斯列、以法蓮、便雅憫、及以色列衆、 And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
10 掃羅子伊施波設立爲以色列王、時年四十、在位二年、惟猶大族從大衞、 Ish–bosheth Saul’s son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
11 大衞在希伯崙爲猶大族王、歷七年有六月、○ And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
12 尼珥子押尼珥、及掃羅子伊施波設之臣僕、出瑪哈念、至基遍、 And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish–bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
13 洗魯雅子約押、及大衞之臣僕亦出、相遇於基遍池側、一軍坐池左、一軍坐池右、 And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
14 押尼珥謂約押曰、任少者起而戲於我前、約押曰、可、 And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.
15 遂起、各如其數而過、屬便雅憫、及掃羅子伊施波設者十二人、大衞之僕從十二人、 Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ish–bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
16 互相執首、以刃刺脇、彼此偕仆、故其處稱曰希利甲哈素林、卽在基遍、 And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath–hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.
17 是日戰勢劇烈、押尼珥與以色列人、敗於大衞之僕從前、 And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
18 有洗魯雅三子、約押、亞比篩、亞撒黑在彼、亞撒黑足疾如野鹿、 And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.
19 追襲押尼珥、不偏於左、不偏於右、 And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.
20 押尼珥回顧曰、汝爲亞撒黑乎、曰、是也、 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am.
21 曰、爾其偏於左右、執一少者、奪其兵甲、惟亞撒黑仍追不舍、 And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.
22 押尼珥曰、其偏之、不我追、奚使我擊爾仆地、若然、我何面目、與爾兄約押相見、 And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?
23 惟彼弗偏、於是押尼珥以槍鐏刺其腹、自後而出、遂仆而死、凡至其死所者、皆止焉、 Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
24 約押及亞比篩追押尼珥、至基亞相對之亞瑪岡、在基遍野之道、時日入矣、 Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.
25 便雅憫人咸集、從押尼珥、成爲一隊、立於岡巔、 And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.
26 押尼珥呼約押曰、刃之吞人、永不已乎、豈不知終必有苦乎、民追兄弟、爾不止之、將至何時、 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?
27 約押曰、我指維生上帝而誓、如爾無言啟釁、則民清晨已返、不追兄弟、 And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.
28 於是約押吹角、民衆乃止、不追以色列人、不復戰鬬、 So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.
29 押尼珥及其從者、終夜而行、經亞拉巴、濟約但、越畢倫、至瑪哈念、○ And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim.
30 約押追押尼珥而歸、集其民衆、大衞僕從少十九人、及亞撒黑、 And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel.
31 便雅憫人及押尼珥之從者、爲大衞僕從所殺者、三百六十人、 But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner’s men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.
32 衆舁亞撒黑、葬於父墓、在伯利恆、約押及從者、終夜而行、至希伯崙、時適黎明、 And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth–lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.
