1 以色列族出、與非利士人戰、建營於以便以謝之側、非利士人建營於亞弗、 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben–ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.
2 非利士人列陳、攻以色列族、戰時、以色列族敗於其前、見殺於陳者、約四千人、 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.
3 民歸營時、以色列長老曰、耶和華今日何擊我於非利士人前、當舁耶和華約匱、自示羅至此、援我於敵手、 And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lord smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.
4 於是民遣人詣示羅、舁居基路伯間、萬軍之耶和華約匱而至、以利二子、何弗尼非尼哈、與約匱偕、 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 耶和華約匱旣入營、以色列衆大聲號呼、地爲響應、 And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.
6 非利士人聞號呼之聲、則曰、希伯來營大聲號呼、曷故、嗣知耶和華匱入營、 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the Lord was come into the camp.
7 乃懼曰、上帝至其營矣、又曰、禍哉我也、前此未嘗有是、 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.
8 禍哉我也、孰克拯我、脫斯大能之神之手、昔在曠野、以諸災擊埃及人者、卽斯神也、 Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.
9 非利士人歟、當壯乃志、爲大丈夫、免爲奴於希伯來族、如彼爲奴於爾、當爲大丈夫而戰、 Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.
10 遂戰、以色列族敗北、各遁歸幕、殺戮甚鉅、步卒隕者三萬、 And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
11 上帝之匱見奪、以利二子、何弗尼非尼哈被殺、 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
12 是日有一便雅憫人、自裂其衣、以塵蒙首、由陳奔於示羅、 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.
13 至時、以利在路旁、坐於座以待、爲上帝匱中心戰慄、其人入城以告、邑衆號呼、 And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.
14 以利聞號呼之聲、則曰、如此喧譁、何意、其人趨至、而告以利、 And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.
15 以利年九十有八、目眊不明、 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.
16 其人曰、我乃自陳而來、今日自陳而逃、曰、吾子、其事若何、 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
17 曰、以色列族遁於非利士人前、殺戮甚鉅、爾之二子、何弗尼非尼哈皆死、上帝之匱見奪、 And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.
18 以利年老體重、聞言及上帝匱、則自座仰跌、隕於門側、折頸而死、以利爲以色列士師、歷四十年、 And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
19 其媳非尼哈妻臨產、聞上帝匱見奪、舅與夫並死、劬勞卽至、卷曲以產、 And his daughter in law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.
20 臨死之際、旁侍之婦曰、勿懼、爾生男矣、婦不答、不以爲意、 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
21 遂名子以迦博、曰、以色列之榮已去、乃因上帝之匱見奪、舅與夫已死也、 And she named the child I–chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
22 又曰、上帝之匱見奪、以色列之榮去矣、 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
