1 維時、耶穌語衆及門徒曰、 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
2 士子法利賽人居摩西位、 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:
3 故凡所命爾者、悉行而守之、但勿效其所爲、以其言而不行也、 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
4 彼以重且難負之任、縛置人肩、己則一指弗動也、 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5 其所行者、皆欲見於人而爲之、闊其佩經、大其衣緣、 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6 好筵間首位、會堂高座、 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 受祝於市、人稱之曰夫子、 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 然爾勿受夫子之稱、蓋爾師惟一、爾曹皆兄弟也、 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9 勿稱在地者爲父、爾父惟一、卽在天者、 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10 亦勿受師尊之稱、爾師尊惟一、卽基督、 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11 爾中大者、當爲爾役、 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 自高者將卑之、自卑者將高之、○ And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
13 禍哉、爾僞善之士子、與法利賽人乎、 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
14 以爾閉天國於人前、己不入之、將入者爾亦不許也、○ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15 禍哉、爾僞善之士子、與法利賽人乎、以爾周行水陸、使一人進教、旣進矣、乃使爲地獄之人、較倍於爾也、○ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
16 禍哉、爾瞽而導者乎、每曰、人指殿而誓、無事也、惟指殿之金而誓、則當償之、 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17 愚而瞽者歟、孰爲大、金乎、抑使金成聖之殿乎、 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
18 爾又云、人指壇而誓、無事也、惟指壇上禮物而誓、則當償之、 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
19 瞽者歟、孰爲大、禮物乎、抑使禮物成聖之壇乎、 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
20 故指壇而誓、是指壇及在其上者而誓也、 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
21 指殿而誓、是指殿及居其中者而誓也、 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
22 指天而誓、是指上帝座、及坐其上者而誓也、○ And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23 禍哉、爾僞善之士子、與法利賽人乎、以爾於薄荷、茴香、馬芹、十輸其一、而於律之尤重者、若義與慈與信、則遺之、此乃爾所當行、而彼亦不可遺也、 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
24 瞽而導者乎、蚋則濾之、駝則吞之、○ Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25 禍哉、爾僞善之士子、與法利賽人乎、以爾潔杯盤之外、而內充以刼奪邪侈也、 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
26 瞽目之法利賽人乎、先潔杯盤之內、則其外亦潔矣、○ Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 禍哉、爾僞善之士子、與法利賽人乎、爾似粉堊之塋、外見爲美、內則死骸諸穢充之矣、 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
28 如是、爾以義外見於人、內則僞善不法充之矣、○ Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 禍哉、爾僞善之士子、與法利賽人乎、以爾建先知之塋、飾義人之墓、 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
30 每曰、若我在我列祖時、必不與流先知之血、 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 如是、爾自證爲殺先知者之裔矣、 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
32 其盈爾祖之量哉、 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
33 蛇乎、蝮類歟、安能逭地獄之刑乎、 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
34 是以我遣先知哲人士子就爾、見殺者有之、釘十架者有之、鞭於會堂、由此邑逐於彼邑者亦有之、 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
35 致世間所流義人之血、悉歸於爾、卽自義人亞伯之血、至爾所殺於殿壇間、巴拉加子撒迦利亞之血、 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
36 我誠語汝、此事悉歸斯世也、○ Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
37 耶路撒冷歟、耶路撒冷歟、殺先知石擊使於爾者乎、我欲集爾赤子、似牝鷄集雛翼下者屢矣、而爾不欲也、 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38 爾室爲墟、遺諸爾矣、 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
39 我語汝、今而後、爾不見我、迨爾云、奉主名而來者、宜頌也、 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
