1 兄弟乎、我與諳律者言、豈不知律之束人、乃畢生乎、 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
2 蓋婦之從夫、夫在則爲律所縛、夫死則脫夫之律、 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
3 是以夫在而他適者、謂之淫婦、夫死則見釋於律、雖他適不爲淫、 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
4 我兄弟乎、如是、爾因基督之身、脫律若死、致可他適、卽自死見起者、俾我儕結果、在於上帝、 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
5 蓋我儕徇形軀時、其由律之惡慾、動於肢體、厥果維死、 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
6 今於素所縛我之律、旣脫之若死、致我之奉事、不以文之舊、而以神之新矣、○ But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
7 然則將何言耶、律爲罪乎、非也、但非由律、則我未嘗知罪、如律不言毋欲、則我不知欲、 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
8 然罪乘機、由誡而動諸欲於我中、蓋無律罪乃死、 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
9 昔我無律而生、誡至、罪復生而我死、 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
10 是致生之誡、適以致死、 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
11 蓋罪乘機、因誡誘我、且以之殺我、 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
12 如是、律聖、誡亦聖、且義且善也、 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
13 然則善其死我乎、非也、但罪因善而死我、以顯其爲罪、俾罪因誡而致其極耳、 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
14 夫我儕知律屬神、我屬形軀、自鬻於罪、 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
15 蓋我所爲者、不自知也、我所願者不行之、我所惡者斯行之、 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
16 若我行所不願者、則許律爲善矣、 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
17 然則行之者、非我也、乃居我中之罪也、 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
18 蓋我知我形軀中無善、雖志於善、而未能行也、 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19 故我不行所願之善、而行所不願之惡、 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20 若我行所不願者、其行之者、非我也、乃居我中之罪也、 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21 是以我覺有一律、卽我願行善、而惡偕我、 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
22 蓋依內心、則悅上帝之律、 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23 然覺肢體中別有一律、與我心志之律戰、虜我服於肢體中之罪律、 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24 苦哉、我之爲人也、誰拯我脫此致死之身乎、 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25 感謝上帝、由我主耶穌基督爲然、是故我以心志服於上帝律、以形軀服於罪律矣、 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
