1 蓋多有舉筆作傳、陳述我中已成之事、 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
2 乃依自始親見而爲道役者、授於我儕、 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
3 我旣於諸事推原詳考、以爲亦當循序書之、達提阿非羅仁臺、 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
4 俾爾知素所習者之確然也、○ That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
5 當猶太王希律時、亞比雅班中、有祭司撒迦利亞者、其妻以利沙伯、亞倫之裔也、 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
6 二人在上帝前、義者也、悉遵行主之誡命禮儀、無間然也、 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
7 但無子、蓋以利沙伯弗妊、而二人年又邁、○ And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
8 當撒迦利亞依其班次、供祭司職於上帝前、 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,
9 循祭司例掣籤、入主殿焚香、 According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
10 焚香時、衆民在外祈禱、 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.
11 主之使顯見、立於香壇右、 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12 撒迦利亞見之、愕然而懼、 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13 天使謂之曰、撒迦利亞、勿懼、爾之祈禱上聞矣、爾妻以利沙伯將生子、可名之曰約翰、 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14 爾必歡樂、衆悅其生、 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 蓋彼將於主前爲大、清酒醇醪皆不飲、自母胎而聖神充之、 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.
16 將使以色列多人、轉而歸主、卽其上帝也、 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
17 彼將以以利亞之性與能、行於主前、使爲父者之心、轉向其子、逆者從義者之智、爲主備適宜之民、 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
18 撒迦利亞謂天使曰、我何以知此、蓋我已老、妻亦年邁矣、 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
19 天使曰、我乃加百列、立於上帝前者、奉使語爾、報此嘉音、 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
20 爾必默不能言、以至事成之日、因爾不信我言、而屆時必應也、 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
21 民俟撒迦利亞、奇其久於殿內、 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
22 及出、不能言、則知其於殿已見異象、彼乃頷以示意、而竟瘖矣、 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
23 職事日滿則歸、○ And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
24 此後、其妻以利沙伯妊、匿居五月、 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
25 曰、主於顧我之日、待我若此、以滌我恥於人間、○ Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
26 至六月、天使加百列奉上帝遣、往加利利之一邑、名拿撒勒、 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 臨一處女馬利亞、大衞室約瑟所聘者、 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
28 天使入曰、沐恩者安、主偕爾矣、 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29 女深訝其言、思此問安何也、 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 天使曰、馬利亞、勿懼、爾獲恩於上帝矣、 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 爾將妊而生子、可名之曰耶穌、 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32 彼將爲大、稱爲至上者之子、主上帝以其祖大衞之位予之、 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 永王於雅各家、其國靡曁、 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34 馬利亞謂天使曰、我未適人、何以得此、 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35 天使曰、聖神將臨爾、至上者之能將庇爾、是以所生者稱聖、爲上帝子、 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
36 且爾戚以利沙伯、素稱弗妊者、今老而妊、已六月矣、 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37 蓋言出於上帝、未有無能者也、 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
38 馬利亞曰、我乃主婢、願如爾言而成於我、天使遂去之、○ And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
39 斯時也、馬利亞起、亟往山地、至猶太一邑、 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40 入撒迦利亞室、問以利沙伯安、 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41 以利沙伯聞馬利亞問安、胎孕內躍、以利沙伯充於聖神、 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
42 大聲呼曰、諸女中爾福矣、爾所妊者亦福矣、 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43 我主之母臨我、何由得此、 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 蓋爾問安之聲、一入我耳、而我之胎孕、遂喜而躍、 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45 信女其福矣、蓋主所語者必應也、○ And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46 馬利亞曰、我心以主爲大、 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 我神悅乎上帝、卽救我者也、 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 以其顧婢之卑微、今而後、萬世將謂余有福矣、 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 蓋彼能者、爲我已成大事、厥名惟聖、 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50 畏之者、則矜恤之、至於世世、 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51 彼以其臂施厥能力、心志驕者散之、 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 有權者黜其位、卑下者升上之、 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53 飢者飽以珍饈、富者使之徒返、 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54 扶持其僕以色列、 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55 如昔諭我祖、垂念矜恤亞伯拉罕及其裔、至於世世、○ As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
56 馬利亞與之同居、約三月而歸、○ And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
57 以利沙伯產期已屆、乃生子、 Now Elisabeth’s full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
58 鄰里親族、聞主大矜恤之、遂與之同樂、 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
59 至八日、衆來爲子行割、欲以其父之名撒迦利亞名之、 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60 其母曰、否、必名之曰約翰、 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
61 衆曰、爾親族中、無名此名者、 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
62 乃頷以示意、問其父欲何名、 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
63 父索簡、書曰、其名約翰、衆奇之、 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
64 其口卽啟、舌亦解、出言頌讚上帝、 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
65 鄰里皆驚、此言徧揚於猶太山地、 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judea.
66 聞者心藏之、曰、此子將若何、蓋主手偕之矣、○ And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 其父撒迦利亞充於聖神、豫言曰、 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
68 可頌哉、主以色列之上帝、垂顧其民、而贖之也、 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
69 於其僕大衞室、爲我儕挺生拯救之角、 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
70 如自世之始、藉聖先知之口所言、 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
71 救我脫於諸敵、及凡惡我者之手、 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
72 施矜恤於我列祖、念其聖約、 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
73 卽與我祖亞伯拉罕所矢之誓、 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
74 使我拯於敵手、 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
75 畢生以聖以義、在於其前、無所懼而事之、 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
76 惟汝小子、將稱爲至上者之先知、因爾行於主前、以備其路、 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
77 俾民知拯救、在罪之赦也、 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
78 卽因我上帝矜恤之心、使旭日自上臨我、 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
79 照夫處於幽暗及死蔭者、導我足而履平康之路、○ To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
80 嬰兒漸長、心靈日健、居於野、至顯於以色列之日、 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
