The Tells Abraham To Offer Isaac as a Sacrifice Some years later God decided to test Abraham, so he spoke to him. Abraham answered, “Here I am, Lord.”
And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. |
The Lord said, “Go get Isaac, your only son, the one you dearly love! Take him to the land of Moriah, and I will show you a mountain where you must sacrifice him to me on the fires of an altar.” | And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
So Abraham got up early the next morning and chopped wood for the fire. He put a saddle on his donkey and set out with Isaac and two servants for the place where God had told him to go. | And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
Three days later Abraham looked off in the distance and saw the place. | Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
He told his servants, “Stay here with the donkey, while my son and I go over there to worship. We will come back.” | And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
Abraham put the wood on Isaac's shoulder, but he carried the hot coals and the knife. As the two of them walked along, | And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
— | And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
Isaac said, “Father, we have the coals and the wood, but where is the lamb for the sacrifice?” “My son,” Abraham answered, “God will provide the lamb.” The two of them walked on, and | And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
when they reached the place that God had told him about, Abraham built an altar and placed the wood on it. Next, he tied up his son and put him on the wood. | And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
He then took the knife and got ready to kill his son. | And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
But the Lord's angel shouted from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am!” he answered. | And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
“Don't hurt the boy or harm him in any way!” the angel said. “Now I know that you truly obey God, because you were willing to offer him your only son.” | And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in the bushes. So he took the ram and sacrificed it instead of his son. | And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
Abraham named that place “The Lord Will Provide.” And even now people say, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” | And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah–jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.
The Lord's angel called out from heaven a second time: | And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
You were willing to offer your only son to the Lord, and so he makes you this solemn promise, | And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
“I will bless you and give you such a large family, that someday your descendants will be more numerous than the stars in the sky or the grains of sand along the seashore. They will defeat their enemies and take over the cities where their enemies live. | That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
You have obeyed me, and so you and your descendants will be a blessing to all nations on earth.” | And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
Abraham and Isaac went back to the servants who had come with him, and they returned to Abraham's home in Beersheba. | So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beer–sheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beer–sheba.
— | And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor;
— | Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,
— | And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.
The Children of Nahor Abraham's brother Nahor had married Milcah, and Abraham was later told that they had eight sons. Uz was their first-born; Buz was next, and then there was Kemuel the father of Aram; their other five sons were: Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel the father of Rebekah.
And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. |
Nahor also had another wife. Her name was Reumah, and she had four sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. | And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.
