Jesus Heals a Sick Man Later, Jesus went to Jerusalem for another Jewish festival.
After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. |
In the city near the sheep gate was a pool with five porches, and its name in Hebrew was Bethzatha. | Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
— | In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
Many sick, blind, lame, and paralyzed people were lying close to the pool. | For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
Beside the pool was a man who had been sick for 38 years. | And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
When Jesus saw the man and realized that he had been crippled for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to be healed?” | When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
The man answered, “Sir, I don't have anyone to put me in the pool when the water is stirred up. I try to get in, but someone else always gets there first.” | The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
Jesus told him, “Pick up your mat and walk!” | Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
Right then the man was healed. He picked up his mat and started walking around. The day on which this happened was a Sabbath. | And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
When the Jewish leaders saw the man carrying his mat, they said to him, “This is the Sabbath! No one is allowed to carry a mat on the Sabbath.” | The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
But he replied, “The man who healed me told me to pick up my mat and walk.” | He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
They asked him, “Who is this man that told you to pick up your mat and walk?” | Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
But he did not know who Jesus was, and Jesus had left because of the crowd. | And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
Later, Jesus met the man in the temple and told him, “You are now well. But don't sin anymore or something worse might happen to you.” | Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
The man left and told the leaders that Jesus was the one who had healed him. | The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.
They started making a lot of trouble for Jesus because he did things like this on the Sabbath. | And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
But Jesus said, “My Father has never stopped working, and this is why I keep on working.” | But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
Now the leaders wanted to kill Jesus for two reasons. First, he had broken the law of the Sabbath. But even worse, he had said God was his Father, which made him equal with God. | Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
The Son's Authority Jesus told the people: I tell you for certain the Son cannot do anything on his own. He can do only what he sees the Father doing, and he does exactly what he sees the Father do.
Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. |
The Father loves the Son and has shown him everything he does. The Father will show him even greater things, and you will be amazed. | For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
Just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants to. | For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
The Father doesn't judge anyone, but he has made his Son the judge of everyone. | For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
The Father wants all people to honor the Son as much as they honor him. When anyone refuses to honor the Son, this is the same as refusing to honor the Father who sent him. | That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
I tell you for certain that everyone who hears my message and has faith in the one who sent me has eternal life and will never be condemned. They have already gone from death to life. | Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
I tell you for certain the time will come, and it is already here, when all of the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen to it will live! | Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
The Father has the power to give life, and he has given that same power to the Son. | For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
And he has given his Son the right to judge everyone, because he is the Son of Man. | And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
Don't be surprised! The time will come when all of the dead will hear the voice of the Son of Man, | Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
and they will come out of their graves. Everyone who has done good things will rise to life, but everyone who has done evil things will rise and be condemned. | And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
I cannot do anything on my own. The Father sent me, and he is the one who told me how to judge. I judge with fairness, because I obey him, and I don't just try to please myself. | I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
Witnesses to Jesus If I speak for myself, there is no way to prove I am telling the truth.
If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. |
But there is someone else who speaks for me, and I know what he says is true. | There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.
You sent messengers to John, and he told them the truth. | Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.
I don't depend on what people say about me, but I tell you these things so that you may be saved. | But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
John was a lamp that gave a lot of light, and you were glad to enjoy his light for a while. | He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
But something more important than John speaks for me. I mean the things that the Father has given me to do! All of these speak for me and prove that the Father sent me. | But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
The Father who sent me also speaks for me, but you have never heard his voice or seen him face to face. | And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
You have not believed his message, because you refused to have faith in the one he sent. | And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
You search the Scriptures, because you think you will find eternal life in them. The Scriptures tell about me, | Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
but you refuse to come to me for eternal life. | And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
I don't care about human praise, | I receive not honour from men.
but I do know that none of you love God. | But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
I have come with my Father's authority, and you have not welcomed me. But you will welcome people who come on their own. | I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
How could you possibly believe? You like to have your friends praise you, and you don't care about praise that the only God can give! | How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?
Don't think that I will be the one to accuse you to the Father. You have put your hope in Moses, yet he is the very one who will accuse you. | Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
Moses wrote about me, and if you had believed Moses, you would have believed me. | For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
But if you don't believe what Moses wrote, how can you believe what I say? | But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
