Jesus Is the True Vine Jesus said to his disciples: I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. |
He cuts away every branch of mine that doesn't produce fruit. But he trims clean every branch that does produce fruit, so that it will produce even more fruit. | Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
You are already clean because of what I have said to you. | Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
Stay joined to me, and I will stay joined to you. Just as a branch cannot produce fruit unless it stays joined to the vine, you cannot produce fruit unless you stay joined to me. | Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
I am the vine, and you are the branches. If you stay joined to me, and I stay joined to you, then you will produce lots of fruit. But you cannot do anything without me. | I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
If you don't stay joined to me, you will be thrown away. You will be like dry branches that are gathered up and burned in a fire. | If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
Stay joined to me and let my teachings become part of you. Then you can pray for whatever you want, and your prayer will be answered. | If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
When you become fruitful disciples of mine, my Father will be honored. | Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
I have loved you, just as my Father has loved me. So remain faithful to my love for you. | As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
If you obey me, I will keep loving you, just as my Father keeps loving me, because I have obeyed him. | If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
I have told you this to make you as completely happy as I am. | These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
Now I tell you to love each other, as I have loved you. | This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
The greatest way to show love for friends is to die for them. | Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
And you are my friends, if you obey me. | Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
Servants don't know what their master is doing, and so I don't speak to you as my servants. I speak to you as my friends, and I have told you everything my Father has told me. | Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
You did not choose me. I chose you and sent you out to produce fruit, the kind of fruit that will last. Then my Father will give you whatever you ask for in my name. | Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
So I command you to love each other. | These things I command you, that ye love one another.
The World's Hatred If the people of this world hate you, just remember that they hated me first.
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. |
If you belonged to the world, its people would love you. But you don't belong to the world. I have chosen you to leave the world behind, and this is why its people hate you. | If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
Remember how I told you that servants are not greater than their master. So if people mistreat me, they will mistreat you. If they do what I say, they will do what you say. | Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
People will do to you exactly what they did to me. They will do it because you belong to me, and they don't know the one who sent me. | But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin. | If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin.
Everyone who hates me also hates my Father. | He that hateth me hateth my Father also.
I have done things no one else has ever done. If they had not seen me do these things, they would not be guilty. But they did see me do these things, and they still hate me and my Father too. | If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.
This is why the Scriptures are true when they say, “People hated me for no reason.” | But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
I will send you the Spirit who comes from the Father and shows what is true. The Spirit will help you and will tell you about me. | But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
Then you will also tell others about me, because you have been with me from the beginning. | And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
