There Is Still Hope / The Prophet Speaks: I have suffered much because God was angry.
I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. |
He chased me into a dark place, where no light could enter. | He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.
I am the only one he punishes over and over again, without ever stopping. | Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.
God caused my skin and flesh to waste away, and he crushed my bones. | My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.
He attacked and surrounded me with hardships and trouble; | He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.
he forced me to sit in the dark like someone long dead. | He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.
God built a fence around me that I cannot climb over, and he chained me down. | He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.
Even when I shouted and prayed for help, he refused to listen. | Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.
God put big rocks in my way and made me follow a crooked path. | He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.
God was like a bear or a lion waiting in ambush for me; | He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.
he dragged me from the road, then tore me to shreds. | He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he hath made me desolate.
God took careful aim and shot his arrows | He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.
straight through my heart. | He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.
I am a joke to everyone— no one ever stops making fun of me. | I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day.
God has turned my life sour. | He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath made me drunken with wormwood.
He made me eat gravel and rubbed me in the dirt. | He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes.
I cannot find peace or remember happiness. | And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace: I forgat prosperity.
I tell myself, “I am finished! I can't count on the Lord to do anything for me.” | And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the Lord:
Just thinking of my troubles and my lonely wandering makes me miserable. | Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.
That's all I ever think about, and I am depressed. | My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.
Then I remember something that fills me with hope. | This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.
The Lord's kindness never fails! If he had not been merciful, we would have been destroyed. | It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
The Lord can always be trusted to show mercy each morning. | They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Deep in my heart I say, “The Lord is all I need; I can depend on him!” | The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
The Lord is kind to everyone who trusts and obeys him. | The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
It is good to wait patiently for the Lord to save us. | It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.
When we are young, it is good to struggle hard | It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.
and to sit silently alone, if this is what the Lord intends. | He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him.
Being rubbed in the dirt can teach us a lesson; | He putteth his mouth in the dust; if so be there may be hope.
we can also learn from insults and hard knocks. | He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him: he is filled full with reproach.
The Lord won't always reject us! | For the Lord will not cast off for ever:
He causes a lot of suffering, but he also has pity because of his great love. | But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.
The Lord doesn't enjoy sending grief or pain. | For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.
Don't trample prisoners under your feet | To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth,
or cheat anyone out of what is rightfully theirs. God Most High sees everything, | To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High,
and he knows when you refuse to give someone a fair trial. | To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not.
No one can do anything without the Lord's approval. | Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?
Good and bad each happen at the command of God Most High. | Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?
We're still alive! We shouldn't complain when we are being punished for our sins. | Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?
Instead, we should think about the way we are living, and turn back to the Lord. | Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord.
When we lift our hands in prayer to God in heaven, we should offer him our hearts and say, | Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.
“We've sinned! We've rebelled against you, and you haven't forgiven us! | We have transgressed and have rebelled: thou hast not pardoned.
Anger is written all over you, as you pursue and slaughter us without showing pity. | Thou hast covered with anger, and persecuted us: thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied.
You are behind a wall of clouds that blocks out our prayers. | Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.
You allowed nations to treat us like garbage; | Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people.
our enemies curse us. | All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.
We are terrified and trapped, caught and crushed.” | Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction.
My people are destroyed! Tears flood my eyes, | Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
and they won't stop | Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission,
until the Lord looks down from heaven and helps. | Till the Lord look down, and behold from heaven.
I am horrified when I see what enemies have done to the young women of our city. | Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.
No one had reason to hate me, but I was hunted down like a bird. | Mine enemies chased me sore, like a bird, without cause.
Then they tried to kill me by tossing me into a pit and throwing stones at me. | They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me.
Water covered my head— I thought I was gone. | Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off.
From the bottom of the pit, I prayed to you, Lord. | I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon.
I begged you to listen. “Help!” I shouted. “Save me!” You answered my prayer | Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.
and came when I was in need. You told me, “Don't worry!” | Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.
You rescued me and saved my life. | O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.
You saw them abuse me, Lord, so make things right. | O Lord, thou hast seen my wrong: judge thou my cause.
You know every plot they have made against me. | Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me.
Yes, you know their insults and their evil plans. | Thou hast heard their reproach, O Lord, and all their imaginations against me;
All day long they attack with words and whispers. | The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day.
No matter what they are doing, they keep on mocking me. | Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their musick.
Pay them back for everything they have done, Lord! | Render unto them a recompence, O Lord, according to the work of their hands.
Put your curse on them and make them suffer. | Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them.
Get angry and go after them until not a trace is left under the heavens. | Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the Lord.
