|---|---|---|
Do as God does. After all, you are his dear children. | Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
Let love be your guide. Christ loved us and offered his life for us as a sacrifice that pleases God. | And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
You are God's people, so don't let it be said that any of you are immoral or indecent or greedy. | But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
Don't use dirty or foolish or filthy words. Instead, say how thankful you are. | Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
Being greedy, indecent, or immoral is just another way of worshiping idols. You can be sure people who behave in this way will never be part of the kingdom that belongs to Christ and to God. | For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Living as People of Light Don't let anyone trick you with foolish talk. God punishes everyone who disobeys him and says foolish things.
Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. |
So don't have anything to do with anyone like that. | Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
You used to be like people living in the dark, but now you are people of the light because you belong to the Lord. So act like people of the light | For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
and make your light shine. Be good and honest and truthful, | (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
as you try to please the Lord. | Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
Don't take part in doing those worthless things that are done in the dark. Instead, show how wrong they are. | And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
It is disgusting even to talk about what is done in the dark. | For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
But the light will show what these things are really like. | But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
Light shows up everything, just as the Scriptures say, “Wake up from your sleep and rise from death. Then Christ will shine on you.” | Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
Act like people with good sense and not like fools. | See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
These are evil times, so make every minute count. | Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Don't be stupid. Instead, find out what the Lord wants you to do. | Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
Don't destroy yourself by getting drunk, but let the Spirit fill your life. | And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
When you meet together, sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, as you praise the Lord with all your heart. | Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Always use the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to thank God the Father for everything. | Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
Wives and Husbands Honor Christ and put others first.
Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. |
A wife should put her husband first, as she does the Lord. | Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
A husband is the head of his wife, as Christ is the head and the Savior of the church, which is his own body. | For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
Wives should always put their husbands first, as the church puts Christ first. | Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
A husband should love his wife as much as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it. | Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
He made the church holy by the power of his word, and he made it pure by washing it with water. | That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
Christ did this, so he would have a glorious and holy church, without faults or spots or wrinkles or any other flaws. | That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
In the same way, a husband should love his wife as much as he loves himself. A husband who loves his wife shows he loves himself. | So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
None of us hate our own bodies. We provide for them and take good care of them, just as Christ does for the church, | For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
because we are each part of his body. | For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother to get married, and he becomes like one person with his wife.” | For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
This is a great mystery, but I understand it to mean Christ and his church. | This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
So each husband should love his wife as much as he loves himself, and each wife should respect her husband. | Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
