A Vision of Locusts The Lord God showed me that he is going to send locusts to attack your crops. It will happen after the king has already been given his share of the grain and before the rest of the grain has been harvested.
Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings. |
In my vision the locusts ate every crop in the land, and I said to the Lord, “Please forgive your nation. It's so weak. How can it survive?” | And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord God, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
Then the Lord felt sorry and answered, “I won't let it be destroyed.” | The Lord repented for this: It shall not be, saith the Lord.
A Vision of Fire The Lord showed me that he is going to send a ball of fire to burn up everything on earth, including the ocean.
Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord God called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part. |
Then I said, “Won't you please stop? How can our weak nation survive?” | Then said I, O Lord God, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
Again the Lord felt sorry and answered, “I won't let it be destroyed.” | The Lord repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord God.
A Vision of a Measuring Line The Lord showed me a vision of himself standing beside a wall and holding a string with a weight tied to the end of it. The string and weight had been used to measure the straightness of the wall.
Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. |
Then he asked, “Amos, what do you see?” “A measuring line,” I answered. The Lord said, “I'm using this measuring line to show that my people Israel don't measure up, and I won't forgive them any more. | And the Lord said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:
Their sacred places will be destroyed, and I will send war against the nation of King Jeroboam.” | And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
Amos and Amaziah Amaziah the priest at Bethel sent this message to King Jeroboam of Israel, “Amos is plotting against you in the very heart of Israel. Our nation cannot put up with his message for very long.
Then Amaziah the priest of Beth–el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. |
Here is what he is saying: ‘Jeroboam will be put to death, and the people will be taken to a foreign country.’ ” | For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.
Then Amaziah told me, “Amos, take your visions and get out! Go back to Judah and earn your living there as a prophet. | Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
Don't do any more preaching at Bethel. The king worships here at our national temple.” | But prophesy not again any more at Beth–el: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.
I answered: I'm not a prophet! And I wasn't trained to be a prophet. I am a shepherd, and I take care of fig trees. | Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
But the Lord told me to leave my herds and preach to the people of Israel. | And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.
And here you are, telling me not to preach! | Now therefore hear thou the word of the Lord: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.
Now, listen to what the Lord says about you: Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, your sons and daughters will be killed in war, and your land will be divided among others. You will die in a country of foreigners, and the people of Israel will be dragged from their homeland. | Therefore thus saith the Lord; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
