| 1 | Love Is Better than Wine This is Solomon's most beautiful song. |
The song of songs, which is Solomon’s. |
| 2 | She Speaks: Kiss me tenderly! Your love is better than wine, |
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine. |
| 3 | and you smell so sweet. All the young women adore you; the very mention of your name is like spreading perfume. * | Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee. |
| 4 | Hurry, my king! Let's hurry. Take me to your home. We are happy for you! And we praise your love even more than wine. Young women of Jerusalem, it is only right that you should adore him. | Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee. |
| 5 | The Young Women Speak: / She Speaks: My skin is dark and beautiful, like a tent in the desert or like Solomon's curtains. |
I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon. |
| 6 | Don't stare at me just because the sun has darkened my skin. My brothers were angry with me; they made me work in the vineyard, and so I neglected my complexion. | Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother’s children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept. |
| 7 | My darling, I love you! Where do you feed your sheep and let them rest at noon? Don't let the other shepherds think badly of me. I'm not one of those women who shamelessly follow after shepherds. | Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions? |
| 8 | He Speaks: My dearest, if you don't know, just follow the path of the sheep. Then feed your young goats near the shepherds' tents. |
If thou know not, O thou fairest among women, go thy way forth by the footsteps of the flock, and feed thy kids beside the shepherds’ tents. |
| 9 | You move as gracefully as the pony that leads the chariot of the king. | I have compared thee, O my love, to a company of horses in Pharaoh’s chariots. |
| 10 | Earrings add to your beauty, and you wear a necklace of precious stones. | Thy cheeks are comely with rows of jewels, thy neck with chains of gold. |
| 11 | Let's make you some jewelry of gold, woven with silver. | We will make thee borders of gold with studs of silver. |
| 12 | She Speaks: My king, while you were on your couch, my aroma was a magic charm. |
While the king sitteth at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof. |
| 13 | My darling, you are perfume between my breasts; | A bundle of myrrh is my wellbeloved unto me; he shall lie all night betwixt my breasts. |
| 14 | you are flower blossoms from the gardens of En-Gedi. | My beloved is unto me as a cluster of camphire in the vineyards of En–gedi. |
| 15 | He Speaks: My darling, you are lovely, so very lovely— your eyes are those of a dove. |
Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves’ eyes. |
| 16 | She Speaks: My love, you are handsome, truly handsome— the fresh green grass will be our wedding bed |
Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant: also our bed is green. |
| 17 | in the shade of cedar and cypress trees. | The beams of our house are cedar, and our rafters of fir. |
