A Law about Divorce / Moses said to Israel:
Suppose a woman was divorced by her first husband because he found something disgraceful about her. He wrote out divorce papers, gave them to her, and sent her away.
When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.
2 Later she married another man, And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man’s wife.
3 who then either divorced her in the same way or died. And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife;
4 Since she has slept with her second husband, she cannot marry her first husband again. Their marriage would pollute the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and he would be disgusted. Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the Lord: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
5
Newlyweds / Moses said to Israel:
If a man and a woman have been married less than one year, he must not be sent off to war or sent away to do forced labor. He must be allowed to stay home for a year and be happy with his wife.
When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken.
6
Loans / Moses said to Israel:
When you lend money to people, you are allowed to keep something of theirs as a guarantee that they will pay back the loan. But don't take one or both of their millstones, or else they may starve. They need these stones for grinding grain into flour to make bread.
No man shall take the nether or the upper millstone to pledge: for he taketh a man’s life to pledge.
7
Kidnapping / Moses said to Israel:
If you are guilty of kidnapping Israelites and forcing them into slavery, you will be put to death to remove this evil from the community.
If a man be found stealing any of his brethren of the children of Israel, and maketh merchandise of him, or selleth him; then that thief shall die; and thou shalt put evil away from among you.
8
Skin Diseases / Moses said to Israel:
I have told the priests what to do if any of you have leprosy, so do exactly what they say.
Take heed in the plague of leprosy, that thou observe diligently, and do according to all that the priests the Levites shall teach you: as I commanded them, so ye shall observe to do.
9 And remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam after you left Egypt. Remember what the Lord thy God did unto Miriam by the way, after that ye were come forth out of Egypt.
10
Loans / Moses said to Israel:
When you lend money to people, you are allowed to keep something of theirs as a guarantee that the money will be paid back. But you must not go into their house to get it.
When thou dost lend thy brother any thing, thou shalt not go into his house to fetch his pledge.
11 Wait outside, and they will bring out the item you have agreed on. Thou shalt stand abroad, and the man to whom thou dost lend shall bring out the pledge abroad unto thee.
12 Suppose someone is so poor that a coat is the only thing that can be offered as a guarantee on a loan. Don't keep the coat overnight. And if the man be poor, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge:
13 Instead, give it back before sunset, so the owner can keep warm and sleep and ask the Lord to bless you. Then the Lord your God will notice that you have done the right thing. In any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the Lord thy God.
14
Poor People's Wages / Moses said:
If you hire poor people to work for you, don't hold back their pay, whether they are Israelites or foreigners who live in your town.
Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates:
15 Pay them their wages at the end of each day, because they live in poverty and need the money to survive. If you don't pay them on time, they will complain about you to the Lord, and he will punish you. At his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the Lord, and it be sin unto thee.
16
The Death Penalty / Moses said to Israel:
Parents must not be put to death for crimes committed by their children, and children must not be put to death for crimes committed by their parents. Don't put anyone to death for someone else's crime.
The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
17
Don't Mistreat the Powerless / Moses said to Israel:
Make sure that orphans and foreigners are treated fairly. And if you lend money to a widow and want to keep something of hers to guarantee that she will pay you back, don't take any of her clothes.
Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take a widow’s raiment to pledge:
18 You were slaves in Egypt until the Lord your God rescued you. That's why I am giving you these laws. But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt, and the Lord thy God redeemed thee thence: therefore I command thee to do this thing.
19
Leave Some of Your Harvest for the Poor / Moses said to Israel:
If you forget to bring in a stack of harvested grain, don't go back in the field to get it. Leave it for the poor, including foreigners, orphans, and widows, and the Lord will make you successful in everything you do.
When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands.
20 When you harvest your olives, don't try to get them all for yourself, but leave some for the poor. When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
21 And when you pick your grapes, go over the vines only once, then let the poor have what is left. When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
22 You lived in poverty as slaves in Egypt until the Lord your God rescued you. That's why I am giving you these laws. And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt: therefore I command thee to do this thing.
