BOOK III / (A psalm by Asaph.) / God Is Good God is truly good to Israel, especially to everyone with a pure heart.
Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart. |
But I almost stumbled and fell, | But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.
because it made me jealous to see proud and evil people and to watch them prosper. | For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
They never have to suffer, they stay healthy, | For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.
and they don't have troubles like everyone else. | They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.
Their pride is like a necklace, and they commit sin more often than they dress themselves. | Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.
Their eyes bulge with fat, and their minds are flooded with foolish thoughts. | Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.
They sneer and say cruel things, and because of their pride, they make violent threats. | They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.
They dare to speak against God and to order others around. | They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.
God will bring his people back, and they will drink the water he so freely gives. | Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.
Only evil people would say, “God Most High cannot know everything!” | And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?
Yet all goes well for them, and they live in peace. | Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.
What good did it do me to keep my thoughts pure and refuse to do wrong? | Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency.
I am sick all day, and I am punished each morning. | For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.
If I had said evil things, I would not have been loyal to your people. | If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children.
It was hard for me to understand all this! | When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;
Then I went to your temple, and there I understood what will happen to my enemies. | Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.
You will make them stumble, never to get up again. | Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction.
They will be terrified, suddenly swept away and no longer there. | How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.
They will disappear, Lord, despised like a bad dream the morning after. | As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.
Once I was bitter and brokenhearted. | Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.
I was stupid and ignorant, and I treated you as a wild animal would. | So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.
But I never really left you, and you hold my right hand. | Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand.
Your advice has been my guide, and later you will welcome me in glory. | Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.
In heaven I have only you, and on this earth you are all I want. | Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.
My body and mind may fail, but you are my strength and my choice forever. | My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.
All-Powerful Lord God, those who stay far from you will be lost, and you will destroy those who are unfaithful. | For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee.
It is good for me to be near you. I choose you as my protector, and I will tell about your wonderful deeds. | But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works.
