(For the music leader. To the tune “A Silent Dove in the Distance.” A special psalm by David when the Philistines captured him in Gath.) / A Prayer of Trust in God Have pity, God Most High! My enemies chase me all day.
Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me. |
Many of them are pursuing and attacking me, | Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.
but even when I am afraid, I keep on trusting you. | What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.
I praise your promises! I trust you and am not afraid. No one can harm me. | In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.
Enemies spend the whole day finding fault with me; all they think about is how to do me harm. | Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil.
They attack from ambush, watching my every step and hoping to kill me. | They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul.
They won't get away with these crimes, God, because when you get angry, you destroy people. | Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast down the people, O God.
You have kept record of my days of wandering. You have stored my tears in your bottle and counted each of them. | Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?
When I pray, Lord God, my enemies will retreat, because I know for certain that you are with me. | When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.
I praise your promises! | In God will I praise his word: in the Lord will I praise his word.
I trust you and am not afraid. No one can harm me. | In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.
I will keep my promises to you, my God, and bring you gifts. | Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.
You protected me from death and kept me from stumbling, so that I would please you and follow the light that leads to life. | For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?
