1
(A psalm by David for the music leader. Use stringed instruments.) / An Evening Prayer
You are my God and protector. Please answer my prayer. I was in terrible distress, but you set me free. Now have pity and listen as I pray.
Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.
2 How long will you people refuse to respect me? You love foolish things, and you run after what is worthless. O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah.
3 The Lord has chosen everyone who is faithful to be his very own, and he answers my prayers. But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the Lord will hear when I call unto him.
4 But each of you had better tremble and turn from your sins. Silently search your heart as you lie in bed. Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.
5 Offer the proper sacrifices and trust the Lord. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord.
6 There are some who ask, “Who will be good to us?” Let your kindness, Lord, shine brightly on us. There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.
7 You brought me more happiness than a rich harvest of grain and grapes. Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased.
8 I can lie down and sleep soundly because you, Lord, will keep me safe. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.
