1
(A special psalm by David.) / The Joy of Forgiveness
Our Lord, you bless everyone whose sins you forgive and wipe away.
Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
2 You bless them by saying, “You told me your sins, without trying to hide them, and now I forgive you.” Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.
3 Before I confessed my sins, my bones felt limp, and I groaned all day long. When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.
4 Night and day your hand weighed heavily on me, and my strength was gone as in the summer heat. For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.
5 So I confessed my sins and told them all to you. I said, “I'll tell the Lord each one of my sins.” Then you forgave me and took away my guilt. I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
6 We worship you, Lord, and we should always pray whenever we find out that we have sinned. Then we won't be swept away by a raging flood. For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.
7 You are my hiding place! You protect me from trouble, and you put songs in my heart because you have saved me. Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.
8 You said to me, “I will point out the road that you should follow. I will be your teacher and watch over you. I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.
9 Don't be stupid like horses and mules that must be led with ropes to make them obey.” Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.
10 All kinds of troubles will strike the wicked, but your kindness shields those who trust you, Lord. Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about.
11 And so your good people should celebrate and shout. Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.
