True Humility Christ encourages you, and his love comforts you. God's Spirit unites you, and you are concerned for others.
If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, |
Now make me completely happy! Live in harmony by showing love for each other. Be united in what you think, as if you were only one person. | Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
Don't be jealous or proud, but be humble and consider others more important than yourselves. | Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
Care about them as much as you care about yourselves | Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
and think the same way that Christ Jesus thought: | Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Christ was truly God. But he did not try to remain equal with God. | Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
Instead he gave up everything and became a slave, when he became like one of us. | But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
Christ was humble. He obeyed God and even died on a cross. | And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Then God gave Christ the highest place and honored his name above all others. | Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
So at the name of Jesus everyone will bow down, those in heaven, on earth, and under the earth. | That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
And to the glory of God the Father everyone will openly agree, “Jesus Christ is Lord!” | And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Lights in the World My dear friends, you always obeyed when I was with you. Now that I am away, you should obey even more. So work with fear and trembling to discover what it really means to be saved.
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. |
God is working in you to make you willing and able to obey him. | For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
Do everything without grumbling or arguing. | Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
Then you will be the pure and innocent children of God. You live among people who are crooked and evil, but you must not do anything they can say is wrong. Try to shine as lights among the people of this world, | That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
as you hold firmly to the message that gives life. Then on the day when Christ returns, I can take pride in you. I can also know that my work and efforts were not useless. | Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.
Your faith in the Lord and your service are like a sacrifice offered to him. And my own blood may have to be poured out with the sacrifice. If this happens, I will be glad and rejoice with you. | Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.
In the same way, you should be glad and rejoice with me. | For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me.
Timothy and Epaphroditus I want to be encouraged by news about you. So I hope the Lord Jesus will soon let me send Timothy to you.
But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. |
I don't have anyone else who cares about you as much as he does. | For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.
The others think only about what interests them and not about what concerns Christ Jesus. | For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.
But you know what kind of person Timothy is. He has worked with me like a son in spreading the good news. | But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.
I hope to send him to you, as soon as I find out what is going to happen to me. | Him therefore I hope to send presently, so soon as I shall see how it will go with me.
And I feel sure the Lord will also let me come soon. | But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly.
I think I ought to send my dear friend Epaphroditus back to you. He is a follower and a worker and a soldier of the Lord, just as I am. You sent him to look after me, | Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.
but now he is eager to see you. He is worried, because you heard he was sick. | For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick.
In fact, he was very sick and almost died. But God was kind to him, and also to me, and he kept me from being burdened down with sorrow. | For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.
Now I am more eager than ever to send Epaphroditus back again. You will be glad to see him, and I won't have to worry any longer. | I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.
Be sure to give him a cheerful welcome, just as people who serve the Lord deserve. | Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation:
He almost died working for Christ, and he risked his own life to do for me what you could not. | Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.
