From Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ. To everyone who shares with us in the privilege of believing that our God and Savior Jesus Christ will do what is just and fair. | Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
I pray that God will be kind to you and will let you live in perfect peace! May you keep learning more and more about God and our Lord Jesus. | Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
Living as the Lord's Followers We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God's own power, when we learned he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness.
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: |
God made great and marvelous promises, so his nature would become part of us. Then we could escape our evil desires and the corrupt influences of this world. | Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
Do your best to improve your faith by adding goodness, understanding, | And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
self-control, patience, devotion to God, | And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
concern for others, and love. | And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
If you keep growing in this way, it will show that what you know about our Lord Jesus Christ has made your lives useful and meaningful. | For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
But if you don't grow, you are like someone who is nearsighted or blind, and you have forgotten that your past sins are forgiven. | But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
My friends, you must do all you can to show God has really chosen and selected you. If you keep on doing this, you won't stumble and fall. | Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
Then our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will give you a glorious welcome into his kingdom that will last forever. | For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
You are holding firmly to the truth you were given. But I am still going to remind you of these things. | Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.
In fact, I think I should keep on reminding you until I leave this body. | Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;
And our Lord Jesus Christ has already told me that I will soon leave it behind. | Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.
This is why I am doing my best to make sure that each of you remembers all of this after I am gone. | Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.
The Message about the Glory of Christ When we told you about the power and the return of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not telling clever stories someone had made up. But with our own eyes we saw his true greatness.
For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. |
God, our great and wonderful Father, truly honored him by saying, “This is my own dear Son, and I am pleased with him.” | For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
We were there with Jesus on the holy mountain and heard this voice speak from heaven. | And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
All of this makes us even more certain that what the prophets said is true. So you should pay close attention to their message, as you would to a lamp shining in some dark place. You must keep on paying attention until daylight comes and the morning star rises in your hearts. | We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
But you need to realize that no one alone can understand any of the prophecies in the Scriptures. | Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
The prophets did not think these things up on their own, but they were guided by the Spirit of God. | For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
