1
Jesus and the Devil
The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert, so that the devil could test him.
Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2 After Jesus had gone without eating for 40 days and nights, he was very hungry. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3 Then the devil came to him and said, “If you are God's Son, tell these stones to turn into bread.” And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 Jesus answered, “The Scriptures say: ‘No one can live only on food. People need every word that God has spoken.’ ” But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 Next, the devil took Jesus into the holy city to the highest part of the temple. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 The devil said, “If you are God's Son, jump off. The Scriptures say: ‘God will give his angels orders about you. They will catch you in their arms, and you won't hurt your feet on the stones.’ ” And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus answered, “The Scriptures also say, ‘Don't try to test the Lord your God!’ ” Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8 Finally, the devil took Jesus up on a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms on earth and their power. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 The devil said to him, “I will give all this to you, if you will bow down and worship me.” And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Jesus answered, “Go away Satan! The Scriptures say: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’ ” Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11 Then the devil left Jesus, and angels came to help him. (,; ,) Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Jesus Begins His Work
When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he went to Galilee.
Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
13 But instead of staying in Nazareth, Jesus moved to Capernaum. This town was beside Lake Galilee in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali. And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
14 So God's promise came true, just as the prophet Isaiah had said, That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
15 “Listen, lands of Zebulun and Naphtali, lands along the road to the sea and across the Jordan. Listen Galilee, land of the Gentiles! The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
16 Although your people live in darkness, they will see a bright light. Although they live in the shadow of death, a light will shine on them.” The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
17 Then Jesus started preaching, “Turn back to God! The kingdom of heaven will soon be here.” (; ) From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
18
Jesus Chooses Four Fishermen
While Jesus was walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw two brothers. One was Simon, also known as Peter, and the other was Andrew. They were fishermen, and they were casting their net into the lake.
And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19 Jesus said to them, “Follow me! I will teach you how to bring in people instead of fish.” And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
20 Right then the two brothers dropped their nets and went with him. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
21 Jesus walked on until he saw James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat with their father, mending their nets. Jesus asked them to come with him. And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
22 At once they left the boat and their father and went with Jesus. () And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
23
Jesus Teaches, Preaches, and Heals
Jesus went all over Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the good news about God's kingdom. He also healed every kind of disease and sickness.
And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
24 News about him spread all over Syria, and people with every kind of sickness or disease were brought to him. Some of them had a lot of demons in them, others were thought to be crazy, and still others could not walk. But Jesus healed them all. And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
25 Large crowds followed Jesus from Galilee and the region around the ten cities known as Decapolis. They also came from Jerusalem, Judea, and from across the Jordan River. And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judea, and from beyond Jordan.
