Jesus Is Taken to Pilate Early the next morning all the chief priests and the nation's leaders met and decided that Jesus should be put to death.
When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: |
They tied him up and led him away to Pilate the governor. (,) | And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
The Death of Judas Judas had betrayed Jesus, but when he learned that Jesus had been sentenced to death, he was sorry for what he had done. He returned the 30 silver coins to the chief priests and leaders
Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, |
and said, “I have sinned by betraying a man who has never done anything wrong.” “So what? That's your problem,” they replied. | Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.
Judas threw the money into the temple and then went out and hanged himself. | And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.
The chief priests picked up the money and said, “This money was paid to have a man killed. We can't put it in the temple treasury.” | And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.
Then they had a meeting and decided to buy a field that belonged to someone who made clay pots. They wanted to use it as a graveyard for foreigners. | And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in.
This is why people still call that place “Field of Blood.” | Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.
So the words of the prophet Jeremiah came true, “They took the thirty silver coins, the price of a person among the people of Israel. | Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;
They paid it for a potter's field, as the Lord had commanded me.” (; ; ) | And gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me.
Pilate Questions Jesus Jesus was brought before Pilate the governor, who asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “Those are your words!” Jesus answered.
And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. |
And when the chief priests and leaders brought their charges against him, he did not say a thing. | And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
Pilate asked him, “Don't you hear what crimes they say you have done?” | Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?
But Jesus did not say anything, and the governor was greatly amazed. (; ; ) | And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.
The Death Sentence During Passover the governor always freed a prisoner chosen by the people.
Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would. |
At that time a well-known terrorist named Jesus Barabbas was in jail. | And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
So when the crowd came together, Pilate asked them, “Which prisoner do you want me to set free? Do you want Jesus Barabbas or Jesus who is called the Messiah?” | Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?
Pilate knew the leaders had brought Jesus to him because they were jealous. | For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
While Pilate was judging the case, his wife sent him a message. It said, “Don't have anything to do with that innocent man. I have had nightmares because of him.” | When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.
But the chief priests and the leaders convinced the crowds to ask for Barabbas to be set free and for Jesus to be killed. | But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
Pilate asked the crowd again, “Which of these two men do you want me to set free?” “Barabbas!” they shouted. | The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.
Pilate asked them, “What am I to do with Jesus, who is called the Messiah?” They all yelled, “Nail him to a cross!” | Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
Pilate answered, “But what crime has he done?” “Nail him to a cross!” they yelled even louder. | And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
Pilate saw that there was nothing he could do and that the people were starting to riot. So he took some water and washed his hands in front of them and said, “I won't have anything to do with killing this man. You are the ones doing it!” | When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
Everyone answered, “We and our own families will take the blame for his death!” | Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
Pilate set Barabbas free. Then he ordered his soldiers to beat Jesus with a whip and nail him to a cross. (; ,) | Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
Soldiers Make Fun of Jesus The governor's soldiers led Jesus into the fortress and brought together the rest of the troops.
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. |
They stripped off Jesus' clothes and put a scarlet robe on him. | And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
They made a crown out of thorn branches and placed it on his head, and they put a stick in his right hand. The soldiers knelt down and pretended to worship him. They made fun of him and shouted, “Hey, you king of the Jews!” | And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
Then they spit on him. They took the stick from him and beat him on the head with it. (; ; ) | And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.
Jesus Is Nailed to a Cross When the soldiers had finished making fun of Jesus, they took off the robe. They put his own clothes back on him and led him off to be nailed to a cross.
And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him. |
On the way they met a man named Simon who was from Cyrene, and they forced him to carry Jesus' cross. | And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.
They came to a place named Golgotha, which means “Place of a Skull.” | And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
There they gave Jesus some wine mixed with a drug to ease the pain. But when Jesus tasted what it was, he refused to drink it. | They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
The soldiers nailed Jesus to a cross and gambled to see who would get his clothes. | And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
Then they sat down to guard him. | And sitting down they watched him there;
Above his head they put a sign that told why he was nailed there. It read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” | And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
The soldiers also nailed two criminals on crosses, one to the right of Jesus and the other to his left. | Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
People who passed by said terrible things about Jesus. They shook their heads and | And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
shouted, “So you're the one who claimed you could tear down the temple and build it again in three days! If you are God's Son, save yourself and come down from the cross!” | And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
The chief priests, the leaders, and the teachers of the Law of Moses also made fun of Jesus. They said, | Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
“He saved others, but he can't save himself. If he is the king of Israel, he should come down from the cross! Then we will believe him. | He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
He trusted God, so let God save him, if he wants to. He even said he was God's Son.” | He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
The two criminals also said cruel things to Jesus. (; ; ) | The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.
The Death of Jesus At noon the sky turned dark and stayed that way until three o'clock.
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. |
Then about that time Jesus shouted, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you deserted me?” | And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Some of the people standing there heard Jesus and said, “He's calling for Elijah.” | Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
One of them at once ran and grabbed a sponge. He soaked it in wine, then put it on a stick and held it up to Jesus. | And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
Others said, “Wait! Let's see if Elijah will come and save him.” | The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
Once again Jesus shouted, and then he died. | Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
At once the curtain in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, and rocks split apart. | And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
Graves opened, and many of God's people were raised to life. | And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
They left their graves, and after Jesus had risen to life, they went into the holy city, where they were seen by many people. | And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
The officer and the soldiers guarding Jesus felt the earthquake and saw everything else that happened. They were frightened and said, “This man really was God's Son!” | Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
Many women had come with Jesus from Galilee to be of help to him, and they were there, looking on at a distance. | And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of James and John were some of these women. (; ; ) | Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s children.
Jesus Is Buried That evening a rich disciple named Joseph from the town of Arimathea
When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple: |
went and asked for Jesus' body. Pilate gave orders for it to be given to Joseph, | He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
who took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth. | And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
Then Joseph put the body in his own tomb that had been cut into solid rock and had never been used. He rolled a big stone against the entrance to the tomb and went away. | And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
All this time Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting across from the tomb. | And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.
On the next day, which was a Sabbath, the chief priests and the Pharisees went together to Pilate. | Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,
They said, “Sir, we remember what this liar said while he was still alive. He claimed in three days he would come back from death. | Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.
So please order the tomb to be carefully guarded for three days. If you don't, his disciples may come and steal his body. They will tell the people he has been raised to life, and this last lie will be worse than the first one.” | Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.
Pilate said to them, “All right, take some of your soldiers and guard the tomb as well as you know how.” | Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.
So they sealed it tight and placed soldiers there to guard it. | So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.
