Workers in a Vineyard As Jesus was telling what the kingdom of heaven would be like, he said: Early one morning a man went out to hire some workers for his vineyard.
For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. |
After he had agreed to pay them the usual amount for a day's work, he sent them off to his vineyard. | And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
About nine that morning, the man saw some other people standing in the market with nothing to do. | And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
He promised to pay them what was fair, if they would work in his vineyard. | And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.
So they went. At noon and again about three in the afternoon he returned to the market. And each time he made the same agreement with others who were loafing around with nothing to do. | Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.
Finally, about five in the afternoon the man went back and found some others standing there. He asked them, “Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?” | And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?
“Because no one has hired us,” they answered. Then he told them to go work in his vineyard. | They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.
That evening the owner of the vineyard told the man in charge of the workers to call them in and give them their money. He also told the man to begin with the ones who were hired last. | So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.
When the workers arrived, the ones who had been hired at five in the afternoon were given a full day's pay. | And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
The workers who had been hired first thought they would be given more than the others. But when they were given the same, | But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.
they began complaining to the owner of the vineyard. | And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,
They said, “The ones who were hired last worked for only one hour. But you paid them the same that you did us. And we worked in the hot sun all day long!” | Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.
The owner answered one of them, “Friend, I didn't cheat you. I paid you exactly what we agreed on. | But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?
Take your money now and go! What business is it of yours if I want to pay them the same that I paid you? | Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.
Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Why should you be jealous, if I want to be generous?” | Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?
Jesus then said, “So it is. Everyone who is now last will be first, and everyone who is first will be last.” (; ) | So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.
Jesus Again Tells about His Death As Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, he took his twelve disciples aside and told them in private:
And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, |
We are now on our way to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses. They will sentence him to death, | Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,
and then they will hand him over to foreigners who will make fun of him. They will beat him and nail him to a cross. But on the third day he will rise from death. () | And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.
A Mother's Request The mother of James and John came to Jesus with her two sons. She knelt down and started begging him to do something for her.
Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. |
Jesus asked her what she wanted, and she said, “When you come into your kingdom, please let one of my sons sit at your right side and the other at your left.” | And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.
Jesus answered, “Not one of you knows what you are asking. Are you able to drink from the cup that I must soon drink from?” James and John said, “Yes, we are!” | But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.
Jesus replied, “You certainly will drink from my cup! But it isn't for me to say who will sit at my right side and at my left. This is for my Father to say.” | And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
When the ten other disciples heard this, they were angry with the two brothers. | And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.
But Jesus called the disciples together and said: You know foreign rulers like to order their people around. And their great leaders have full power over everyone they rule. | But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
But don't act like them. If you want to be great, you must be the servant of all the others. | But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
And if you want to be first, you must be the slave of the rest. | And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
The Son of Man did not come to be a slave master, but a slave who will give his life to rescue many people. (; ) | Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Jesus Heals Two Blind Men Jesus was followed by a large crowd as he and his disciples were leaving Jericho.
And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. |
Two blind men were sitting beside the road. And when they heard that Jesus was coming their way, they shouted, “Lord and Son of David, have pity on us!” | And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
The crowd told them to be quiet, but they shouted even louder, “Lord and Son of David, have pity on us!” | And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
When Jesus heard them, he stopped and asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” | And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?
They answered, “Lord, we want to see!” | They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.
Jesus felt sorry for them and touched their eyes. At once they could see, and they became his followers. | So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
