The True Glory of Jesus Six days later Jesus took Peter and the brothers James and John with him. They went up on a very high mountain where they could be alone.
And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, |
There in front of the disciples, Jesus was completely changed. His face was shining like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. | And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.
All at once Moses and Elijah were there talking with Jesus. | And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.
So Peter said to him, “Lord, it is good for us to be here! Let us make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” | Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
While Peter was still speaking, the shadow of a bright cloud passed over them. From the cloud a voice said, “This is my own dear Son, and I am pleased with him. Listen to what he says!” | While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
When the disciples heard the voice, they were so afraid they fell flat on the ground. | And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.
But Jesus came over and touched them. He said, “Get up and don't be afraid!” | And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.
When they opened their eyes, they saw only Jesus. | And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.
On their way down from the mountain, Jesus warned his disciples not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Son of Man had been raised from death. | And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.
The disciples asked Jesus, “Don't the teachers of the Law of Moses say Elijah must come before the Messiah does?” | And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?
Jesus told them, “Elijah certainly will come and get everything ready. | And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.
In fact, he has already come. But the people did not recognize him and treated him just as they wanted to. They will soon make the Son of Man suffer in the same way.” | But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
Then the disciples understood Jesus was talking to them about John the Baptist. (; ) | Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.
Jesus Heals a Boy Jesus and his disciples returned to the crowd. A man knelt in front of him
And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, |
and said, “Lord, have pity on my son! He has a bad case of epilepsy and often falls into a fire or into water. | Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.
I brought him to your disciples, but none of them could heal him.” | And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
Jesus said, “You people are too stubborn to have any faith! How much longer must I be with you? Why do I have to put up with you? Bring the boy here.” | Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.
Then Jesus spoke sternly to the demon. It went out of the boy, and right then he was healed. | And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
Later the disciples went to Jesus in private and asked him, “Why couldn't we force out the demon?” | Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
— | And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
Jesus replied: It is because you don't have enough faith! But I can promise you this. If you had faith no larger than a mustard seed, you could tell this mountain to move from here to there. And it would. Everything would be possible for you. (; ) | Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
Jesus Again Speaks about His Death While Jesus and his disciples were going from place to place in Galilee, he told them, “The Son of Man will be handed over to people
And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: |
who will kill him. But three days later he will rise to life.” All of this made the disciples very sad. | And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.
Paying the Temple Tax When Jesus and the others arrived in Capernaum, the collectors for the temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Does your teacher pay the temple tax?”
And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? |
“Yes, he does,” Peter answered. After they had returned home, Jesus went up to Peter and asked him, “Simon, what do you think? Do the kings of this earth collect taxes and fees from their own people or from foreigners?” | He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?
Peter answered, “From foreigners.” Jesus replied, “Then their own people don't have to pay. | Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.
But we don't want to cause trouble. So go cast a line into the lake and pull out the first fish you hook. Open its mouth, and you will find a coin. Use it to pay your taxes and mine.” | Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.
