The Teaching of the Ancestors
Some Pharisees and several teachers of the Law of Moses from Jerusalem came and gathered around Jesus.
Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.
2 They noticed that some of his disciples ate without first washing their hands. And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.
3 The Pharisees and many others obey the teachings of their ancestors. They always wash their hands in the proper way before eating. For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.
4 None of them will eat anything they buy in the market until it is washed. They also follow a lot of other teachings, such as washing cups, pitchers, and bowls. And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.
5 The Pharisees and teachers asked Jesus, “Why don't your disciples obey what our ancestors taught us to do? Why do they eat without washing their hands?” Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?
6 Jesus replied: You are nothing but show-offs! The prophet Isaiah was right when he wrote that God had said, “All of you praise me with your words, but you never really think about me. He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
7 It is useless for you to worship me, when you teach rules made up by humans.” Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
8 You disobey God's commands in order to obey what humans have taught. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
9 You are good at rejecting God's commands so that you can follow your own teachings! And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
10 Didn't Moses command you to respect your father and mother? Didn't he tell you to put to death all who curse their parents? For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:
11 But you let people get by without helping their parents when they should. You let them say that what they own has been offered to God. But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.
12 You won't let those people help their parents. And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;
13 And you ignore God's commands in order to follow your own teaching. You do a lot of other things just as bad. () Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

What Really Makes People Unclean
Jesus called the crowd together again and said, “Pay attention and try to understand what I mean.
And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:
15 — There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.
16 The food that you put into your mouth doesn't make you unclean and unfit to worship God. The bad words that come out of your mouth are what make you unclean.” If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
17 After Jesus and his disciples had left the crowd and gone into the house, they asked him what these sayings meant. And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.
18 He answered, “Don't you know what I am talking about by now? You surely know that the food you put into your mouth cannot make you unclean. And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;
19 It doesn't go into your heart, but into your stomach, and then out of your body.” By saying this, Jesus meant that all foods were fit to eat. Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?
20 Then Jesus said: What comes from your heart is what makes you unclean. And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
21 Out of your heart come evil thoughts, vulgar deeds, stealing, murder, For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22 unfaithfulness in marriage, greed, meanness, deceit, indecency, envy, insults, pride, and foolishness. Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23 All of these come from your heart, and they are what make you unfit to worship God. () All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

A Woman's Faith
Jesus left and went to the region near the town of Tyre, where he stayed in someone's home. He did not want people to know he was there, but they found out anyway.
And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.
25 A woman whose daughter had an evil spirit in her heard where Jesus was. And at once she came and knelt down at his feet. For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:
26 The woman was Greek and had been born in the part of Syria known as Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to force the demon out of her daughter. The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.
27 But Jesus said, “The children must first be fed! It isn't right to take away their food and feed it to dogs.” But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.
28 The woman replied, “Lord, even puppies eat the crumbs that children drop from the table.” And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs.
29 Jesus answered, “That's true! You may go now. The demon has left your daughter.” And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.
30 When the woman got back home, she found her child lying on the bed. The demon had gone. And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

Jesus Heals a Man Who Was Deaf and Could Hardly Talk
Jesus left the region around Tyre and went by way of Sidon toward Lake Galilee. He went through the land near the ten cities known as Decapolis.
And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.
32 Some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk. They begged Jesus just to touch him. And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.
33 After Jesus had taken him aside from the crowd, he stuck his fingers in the man's ears. Then he spit and put it on the man's tongue. And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;
34 Jesus looked up toward heaven, and with a groan he said, “Effatha!” which means “Open up!” And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.
35 At once the man could hear, and he had no more trouble talking clearly. And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.
36 Jesus told the people not to say anything about what he had done. But the more he told them, the more they talked about it. And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;
37 They were completely amazed and said, “Everything he does is good! He even heals people who cannot hear or talk.” And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
