Jesus Heals a Man Who Could Not Walk Jesus went back to Capernaum, and a few days later people heard that he was at home.
And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house. |
Then so many of them came to the house that there wasn't even standing room left in front of the door. Jesus was still teaching | And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.
when four people came up, carrying a man on a mat because he could not walk. | And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.
But because of the crowd, they could not get him to Jesus. So they made a hole in the roof above him and let the man down in front of everyone. | And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.
When Jesus saw how much faith they had, he said to the man, “My friend, your sins are forgiven.” | When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
Some of the teachers of the Law of Moses were sitting there. They started wondering, | But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
“Why would he say such a thing? He must think he is God! Only God can forgive sins.” | Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?
At once, Jesus knew what they were thinking, and he said, “Why are you thinking such things? | And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?
Is it easier for me to tell this man his sins are forgiven or to tell him to get up and pick up his mat and go on home? | Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?
I will show you that the Son of Man has the right to forgive sins here on earth.” So Jesus said to the man, | But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)
“Get up! Pick up your mat and go on home.” | I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
The man got right up. He picked up his mat and went out while everyone watched in amazement. They praised God and said, “We have never seen anything like this!” (; ) | And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.
Jesus Chooses Levi Once again, Jesus went to the shore of Lake Galilee. A large crowd gathered around him, and he taught them.
And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them. |
As he walked along, he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus. Levi was sitting at the place for paying taxes, and Jesus said to him, “Follow me!” So he got up and went with Jesus. | And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alpheus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.
Later, Jesus and his disciples were having dinner at Levi's house. Many tax collectors and other sinners had become followers of Jesus, and they were also guests at the dinner. | And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.
Some of the teachers of the Law of Moses were Pharisees, and they saw Jesus eating with sinners and tax collectors. So they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” | And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
Jesus heard them and answered, “Healthy people don't need a doctor, but sick people do. I didn't come to invite good people to be my followers. I came to invite sinners.” (; ) | When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
People Ask about Going without Eating The followers of John the Baptist and the Pharisees often went without eating. Some people came and asked Jesus, “Why do the followers of John and those of the Pharisees often go without eating, while your disciples never do?”
And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? |
Jesus answered: The friends of a bridegroom don't go without eating while he is still with them. | And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
But the time will come when he will be taken from them. Then they will go without eating. | But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
No one patches old clothes by sewing on a piece of new cloth. The new piece would shrink and tear a bigger hole. | No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.
No one pours new wine into old wineskins. The wine would swell and burst the old skins. Then the wine would be lost, and the skins would be ruined. New wine must be put into new wineskins. (; ) | And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.
A Question about the Sabbath One Sabbath Jesus and his disciples were walking through some wheat fields. His disciples were picking grains of wheat as they went along.
And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. |
Some Pharisees asked Jesus, “Why are your disciples picking grain on the Sabbath? They are not supposed to do that!” | And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?
Jesus answered, “Haven't you read what David did when he and his followers were hungry and in need? | And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?
It was during the time of Abiathar the high priest. David went into the house of God and ate the sacred loaves of bread that only priests are allowed to eat. He also gave some to his followers.” | How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
Jesus finished by saying, “People were not made for the good of the Sabbath. The Sabbath was made for the good of people. | And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
So the Son of Man is Lord over the Sabbath.” | Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
