I don't need to write you about the time or date when all this will happen. | But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
You surely know that the Lord's return will be as a thief coming at night. | For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
People will think they are safe and secure. But destruction will suddenly strike them like the pains of a woman about to give birth. And they won't escape. | For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
My dear friends, you don't live in darkness, and so that day won't surprise you like a thief. | But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
You belong to the light and live in the day. We don't live in the night or belong to the dark. | Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
Others may sleep, but we should stay awake and be alert. | Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
People sleep during the night, and some even get drunk. | For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
But we belong to the day. So we must stay sober and let our faith and love be like a suit of armor. Our firm hope that we will be saved is our helmet. | But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
God doesn't intend to punish us, but wants us to be saved by our Lord Jesus Christ. | For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
Christ died for us, so we could live with him, whether we are alive or dead when he comes. | Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
This is why you must encourage and help each other, just as you are already doing. | Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
Final Instructions and Greetings My friends, we ask you to be thoughtful of your leaders who work hard and tell you how to live for the Lord.
And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; |
Show them great respect and love because of their work. Try to get along with each other. | And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves.
My friends, we beg you to warn anyone who isn't living right. Encourage anyone who feels left out, help all who are weak, and be patient with everyone. | Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
Don't be hateful to people, just because they are hateful to you. Rather, be good to each other and to everyone else. | See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
Always be joyful | Rejoice evermore.
and never stop praying. | Pray without ceasing.
Whatever happens, keep thanking God because of Jesus Christ. This is what God wants you to do. | In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
Don't turn away God's Spirit | Quench not the Spirit.
or ignore prophecies. | Despise not prophesyings.
Put everything to the test. Accept what is good | Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
and don't have anything to do with evil. | Abstain from all appearance of evil.
I pray that God, who gives peace, will make you completely holy. And may your spirit, soul, and body be kept healthy and faultless until our Lord Jesus Christ returns. | And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The one who chose you can be trusted, and he will do this. | Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
Friends, please pray for us. | Brethren, pray for us.
Give the Lord's followers a warm greeting. | Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.
In the name of the Lord I beg you to read this letter to all his followers. | I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.
I pray that our Lord Jesus Christ will be kind to you! | The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. The first epistle unto the Thessalonians was written from Athens.
