A Plot To Kill Jesus
The Festival of Thin Bread, also called Passover, was near.
Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.
2 The chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses were looking for a way to get rid of Jesus, because they were afraid of what the people might do. And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.
3 Then Satan entered the heart of Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve apostles. Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.
4 Judas went to talk with the chief priests and the officers of the temple police about how he could help them arrest Jesus. And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.
5 They were very pleased and offered to pay Judas some money. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.
6 He agreed and started looking for a good chance to betray Jesus when the crowds were not around. (; ; ) And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.

Jesus Eats with His Disciples
The day had come for the Festival of Thin Bread, and it was time to kill the Passover lambs.
Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.
8 So Jesus said to Peter and John, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us to eat.” And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.
9 But they asked, “Where do you want us to prepare it?” And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?
10 Jesus told them, “As you go into the city, you will meet a man carrying a jar of water. Follow him into the house And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.
11 and say to the owner, ‘Our teacher wants to know where he can eat the Passover meal with his disciples.’ And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?
12 The owner will take you upstairs and show you a large room ready for you to use. Prepare the meal there.” And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.
13 Peter and John left. They found everything just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal. (; ; ) And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
14
The Lord's Supper
When the time came for Jesus and the apostles to eat,
And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.
15 he said to them, “I have very much wanted to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer. And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:
16 I tell you I will not eat another Passover meal until it is finally eaten in God's kingdom.” For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
17 Jesus took a cup of wine in his hands and gave thanks to God. Then he told the apostles, “Take this wine and share it with each other. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:
18 I tell you that I will not drink any more wine until God's kingdom comes.” For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.
19 Jesus took some bread in his hands and gave thanks for it. He broke the bread and handed it to his apostles. Then he said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Eat this as a way of remembering me!” And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
20 After the meal he took another cup of wine in his hands. Then he said, “This is my blood. It is poured out for you, and with it God makes his new agreement. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
21 The one who will betray me is here at the table with me! But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.
22 The Son of Man will die in the way that has been decided for him, but it will be terrible for the one who betrays him!” And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!
23 Then the apostles started arguing about who would ever do such a thing. And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.
24
An Argument about Greatness
The apostles got into an argument about which one of them was the greatest.
And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.
25 So Jesus told them: Foreign kings order their people around, and powerful rulers call themselves everyone's friends. And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.
26 But don't be like them. The most important one of you should be like the least important, and your leader should be like a servant. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.
27 Who do people think is the greatest, a person who is served or one who serves? Isn't it the one who is served? But I have been with you as a servant. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
28 You have stayed with me in all my troubles. Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.
29 So I will give you the right to rule as kings, just as my Father has given me the right to rule as a king. And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;
30 You will eat and drink with me in my kingdom, and you will each sit on a throne to judge the twelve tribes of Israel. (; ; ) That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31
Jesus' Disciples Will Be Tested
Jesus said, “Simon, listen to me! Satan has demanded the right to test each one of you, as a farmer does when he separates wheat from the husks.
And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
32 But Simon, I have prayed that your faith will be strong. And when you have come back to me, help the others.” But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
33 Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to jail and even to die with you.” And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
34 Jesus replied, “Peter, I tell you that before a rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will say three times that you don't know me.” And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
35
Moneybags, Traveling Bags, and Swords
Jesus asked his disciples, “When I sent you out without a moneybag or a traveling bag or sandals, did you need anything?” “No!” they answered.
And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
36 Jesus told them, “But now, if you have a moneybag, take it with you. Also take a traveling bag, and if you don't have a sword, sell some of your clothes and buy one. Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
37 Do this because the Scriptures say, ‘He was considered a criminal.’ This was written about me, and it will soon come true.” For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
38 The disciples said, “Lord, here are two swords!” “Enough of that!” Jesus replied. (; ) And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.
39
Jesus Prays
Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives, as he often did, and his disciples went with him.
And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.
40 When they got there, he told them, “Pray that you won't be tested.” And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
41 Jesus walked on a little way before he knelt down and prayed, And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
42 “Father, if you will, please don't make me suffer by drinking from this cup. But do what you want, and not what I want.” Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
43 Then an angel from heaven came to help him. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
44 Jesus was in great pain and prayed so sincerely that his sweat fell to the ground like drops of blood. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45 Jesus got up from praying and went over to his disciples. They were asleep and worn out from being so sad. And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,
46 He said to them, “Why are you asleep? Wake up and pray that you won't be tested.” (; ; ) And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
47
Jesus Is Arrested
While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd came up. It was led by Judas, one of the twelve apostles. He went over to Jesus and greeted him with a kiss.
And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.
48 Jesus asked Judas, “Are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?
49 When Jesus' disciples saw what was about to happen, they asked, “Lord, should we attack them with a sword?” When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?
50 One of the disciples even struck at the high priest's servant with his sword and cut off the servant's right ear. And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
51 “Enough of that!” Jesus said. Then he touched the servant's ear and healed it. And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.
52 Jesus spoke to the chief priests, the temple police, and the leaders who had come to arrest him. He said, “Why do you come out with swords and clubs and treat me like a criminal? Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?
53 I was with you every day in the temple, and you didn't arrest me. But this is your time, and darkness is in control.” (,,; ,,; ,) When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
54
Peter Says He Doesn't Know Jesus
Jesus was arrested and led away to the house of the high priest, while Peter followed at a distance.
Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off.
55 Some people built a fire in the middle of the courtyard and were sitting around it. Peter sat there with them, And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.
56 and a servant girl saw him. Then after she had looked at him carefully, she said, “This man was with Jesus!” But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.
57 Peter said, “Woman, I don't even know that man!” And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.
58 A little later someone else saw Peter and said, “You are one of them!” “No, I'm not!” Peter replied. And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.
59 About an hour later another man insisted, “This man must have been with Jesus. They both come from Galilee.” And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilean.
60 Peter replied, “I don't know what you are talking about!” Right then, while Peter was still speaking, a rooster crowed. And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.
61 The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered that the Lord had said, “Before a rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will say three times that you don't know me.” And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
62 Then Peter went out and cried bitterly. And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.
63 The men who were guarding Jesus made fun of him and beat him. And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.
64 They put a blindfold on him and said, “Tell us who struck you!” And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?
65 They kept on insulting Jesus in many other ways. (; ; ) And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.
66
Jesus Is Questioned by the Council
At daybreak the nation's leaders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law of Moses got together and brought Jesus before their council.
And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,
67 They said, “Tell us! Are you the Messiah?” Jesus replied, “If I said so, you wouldn't believe me. Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:
68 And if I asked you a question, you wouldn't answer. And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.
69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right side of God All-Powerful.” Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.
70 Then they asked, “Are you the Son of God?” Jesus answered, “You say I am!” Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.
71 They replied, “Why do we need more witnesses? He said it himself!” And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.
