Telling about Christ and the Cross
Friends, when I came and told you the mystery that God had shared with us, I didn't use big words or try to sound wise.
And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
In fact, while I was with you, I made up my mind to speak only about Jesus Christ, who had been nailed to a cross. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
At first, I was weak and trembling with fear. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
When I talked with you or preached, I didn't try to prove anything by sounding wise. I simply let God's Spirit show his power. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
That way you would have faith because of God's power and not because of human wisdom. That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
We do use wisdom when speaking to people who are mature in their faith. But it isn't the wisdom of this world or of its rulers, who will soon disappear. Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
We speak of God's hidden and mysterious wisdom that God decided to use for our glory long before the world began. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
The rulers of this world didn't know anything about this wisdom. If they had known about it, they would not have nailed the glorious Lord to a cross. Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
But it is just as the Scriptures say, “What God has planned for people who love him is more than eyes have seen or ears have heard. It has never even entered our minds!” But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
God's Spirit has shown you everything. His Spirit finds out everything, even what is deep in the mind of God. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
You are the only one who knows what is in your own mind, and God's Spirit is the only one who knows what is in God's mind. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
But God has given us his Spirit. This is why we don't think the same way that the people of this world think. This is also why we can recognize the blessings God has given us. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
Every word we speak was taught to us by God's Spirit, not by human wisdom. And this same Spirit helps us teach spiritual things to spiritual people. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
This is why only someone who has God's Spirit can understand spiritual blessings. Anyone who doesn't have God's Spirit thinks these blessings are foolish. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
People who are guided by the Spirit can make all kinds of judgments, but they cannot be judged by others. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
The Scriptures ask, “Has anyone ever known the thoughts of the Lord or given him advice?” But we understand what Christ is thinking. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
