Love What if I could speak all languages of humans and even of angels? If I did not love others, I would be nothing more than a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. |
What if I could prophesy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge? And what if I had faith that moved mountains? I would be nothing, unless I loved others. | And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
What if I gave away all that I owned and let myself be burned alive? I would gain nothing, unless I loved others. | And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
Love is patient and kind, never jealous, boastful, proud, or | Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
rude. Love isn't selfish or quick tempered. It doesn't keep a record of wrongs that others do. | Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
Love rejoices in the truth, but not in evil. | Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
Love is always supportive, loyal, hopeful, and trusting. | Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
Love never fails! Everyone who prophesies will stop, and unknown languages will no longer be spoken. All that we know will be forgotten. | Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
We don't know everything, and our prophecies are not complete. | For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
But what is perfect will someday appear, and what isn't perfect will then disappear. | But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
When we were children, we thought and reasoned as children do. But when we grew up, we quit our childish ways. | When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
Now all we can see of God is like a cloudy picture in a mirror. Later we will see him face to face. We don't know everything, but then we will, just as God completely understands us. | For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
For now there are faith, hope, and love. But of these three, the greatest is love. | And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
