| 1 | Nebuďtež mnozí mistři, bratří moji, vědouce, že bychom těžší odsouzení vzali. | My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. |
| 2 | V mnohém zajisté klesáme všickni. Kdožť neklesá v slovu, tenť jest dokonalý muž, mohoucí jako uzdou spravovati také všecko tělo. | For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. |
| 3 | An, my koňům udidla v ústa dáváme, aby nám povolni byli, a vším tělem jejich vládneme. | Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. |
| 4 | An, i lodí tak veliké jsouce, a prudkými větry hnány bývajíce, však i nejmenším veslem bývají sem i tam obracíny, kamžkoli líbí se tomu, kdož je spravuje. | Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. |
| 5 | Tak i jazyk malý oud jest, a však veliké věci provodí. Aj, maličký oheň, kterak veliký les zapálí! | Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! |
| 6 | Jazyk pak jest oheň a svět nepravosti. Takť jest postaven jazyk mezi oudy našimi, nanečišťující celé tělo, a rozpalující kolo narození našeho, jsa rozněcován od ohně pekelného. | And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. |
| 7 | Všeliké zajisté přirození i zvěři, i ptactva, i zeměplazů, i mořských potvor bývá skroceno, a jest okroceno od lidí; | For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: |
| 8 | Ale jazyka žádný z lidí skrotiti nemůže. Tak jest neskrotitelné zlé, pln jsa jedu smrtelného. | But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. |
| 9 | Jím dobrořečíme Bohu Otci, a jím zlořečíme lidem, ku podobenství Božímu stvořeným. | Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. |
| 10 | Z jedněch a týchž úst pochází dobrořečení i zlořečení. Ne takť býti má, bratří moji. | Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. |
| 11 | Zdaliž studnice jedním pramenem vydává sladkost i hořkost? | Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? |
| 12 | Zdaliž může, bratří moji, fíkový strom nésti olivky, aneb vinný kmen fíky? Takť žádná studnice slané i sladké vody nevydává. | Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. |
| 13 | Kdo jest moudrý a umělý mezi vámi? Ukažiž dobrým obcováním skutky své v krotké moudrosti. | Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. |
| 14 | Pakliť máte hořkou závist, a dráždění v srdci svém, nechlubte se, a neklamejte proti pravdě. | But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. |
| 15 | Neníť ta moudrost s hůry sstupující, ale jest zemská, hovadná, ďábelská. | This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. |
| 16 | Nebo kdež jest závist a rozdráždění, tu i roztržka i všeliké dílo zlé. | For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. |
| 17 | Ale moudrost, kteráž jest s hůry, nejprvé zajisté jest čistotná, potom pokojná, mírná, povolná, plná milosrdenství a ovoce dobrého, bez rozsuzování a bez pokrytství. | But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. |
| 18 | Ovoce pak spravedlnosti v pokoji rozsívá se těm, kteříž pokoj působí. | And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. |
